It is not by placing them in the four entries and the five superknowledges. Up to this point, for this Prajnaparamita, one should mainly engage in proper attention, namely, holding, retaining, reading, and fully understanding it. It is shown that even the merit of placing all sentient beings from Jambudvipa up to the three-thousand great-thousand world realms in the ten virtues and so forth will increase the merit even more. Among them, proper attention is this: not engaging in duality, nor engaging in non-duality, with such wisdom, holding, fully understanding, retaining, reading the Prajnaparamita, and engaging in proper attention. From this up to "All-knowingness itself is proper attention," it shows the meaning of proper attention. That is, when practicing the Prajnaparamita, one realizes that all phenomena are empty in ultimate truth, so one does not grasp at the two extremes of existence and non-existence, and one does not grasp at being separate from the extremes of existence and non-existence. Thus, practicing the Prajnaparamita and so forth, up to all-knowingness, is proper attention, as it is shown. Kausika, furthermore, any son or daughter of good family who extensively speaks and teaches this Prajnaparamita to others with various names and so forth, that is, even if one has taken and held this Prajnaparamita oneself, one does not view it as dual, nor does one view it as non-dual, and so forth, extensively showing and explaining its meaning to others, it shows the merit of increasing merit even more. Among them, extensively speaking and teaching with various names means explaining and interpreting, as well as distinguishing and clarifying, and truly showing and determining its meaning. If one teaches in this way, one should know that it is a variety of names for thoroughly showing and explaining the non-dual meaning of the Prajnaparamita to others. The Prajnaparamita is not viewed as dual, it is not viewed as non-dual.

Because, in reality, the nature of Prajñāpāramitā is non-discrimination of all dharmas, so if even "non-dual nature" is not discriminated, what need is there to mention discriminating "dual nature"? Therefore, Prajñāpāramitā does not view in terms of duality, nor does it view in terms of non-duality; this is its meaning. "Not characterized, not uncharacterized" means that when observing objects such as the eye, one does not grasp the characteristics of the discriminated forms and so on, nor does one discriminate "uncharacterized," because there is no discrimination. "Not taking, not abandoning" means that when performing good or bad deeds, there is no discrimination of taking rebirth in the future, and when experiencing the results of karma, there is no discrimination of abandoning suffering and so on. "Not decreasing, not increasing" means that when distinguishing knowable dharmas, one does not deny existing entities by saying "they do not exist," thus not slandering or decreasing; nor does one affirm non-existent entities by saying "they exist," thus not exaggerating or increasing. "Not defiled, not purified" means that all sentient beings possess the Tathāgatagarbha, which is pure in nature, so there is no defilement even in the state of ordinary beings, and no purification even in the state of becoming noble. "Not arising, not ceasing" means that when fully examining the reality of what is to be known, one realizes that the nature of dharmas is actually without arising or ceasing. "Not grasping, not not-grasping" means that when focusing the mind on the suchness of dharmas and meditating, because both the grasper and the grasped are non-existent, there is no discrimination of either grasping or not-grasping. "Not taking, not abandoning" means that when ascending from a lower ground to a higher ground, one does not actually discriminate taking the qualities of the higher ground and abandoning the faults of the lower ground. "Not abiding, not not-abiding" means that when ascending from a higher ground to a higher ground, one does not discriminate where to abide, nor does one discriminate the lower ground to be abandoned.
