From "being solitary and naturally empty," up to "a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, it should be understood in this way," it is said that what was mentioned above is inseparable from the Perfection of Wisdom. To dispel the notion that some in the assembly thought the Perfection of Wisdom was inherently existent, Subhuti inquired, and the Blessed One gave his answer. The term "inseparable from the Perfection of Wisdom" does not mean that it is inherently existent and inseparable. In ultimate reality, it is empty of inherent existence. Suchness, the realm of phenomena, and the ultimate limit are of one taste in their nature. If there is no clinging to increase or decrease, or to one and two, then one can comprehend the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom and abide on the irreversible ground. Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, what is the emptiness of the Perfection of Wisdom, the voidness, the hollowness, the unadulteratedness, and the lack of essence that constitutes the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom?" This question was posed to dispel the notion that some in the assembly, after hearing "a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, it should be understood in this way," might think that the Bodhisattva who practices in this way is inherently existent. Emptiness, voidness, hollowness, unadulteratedness, and lack of essence are all synonyms for emptiness. If both the Perfection of Wisdom and the one who practices it are empty of inherent existence, then who practices upon whom? That is the meaning of the question. Voidness, hollowness, unadulteratedness, and lack of essence should be understood as synonyms for emptiness. The Blessed One replied: "Subhuti, it is not so." The statement "one practices the Perfection of Wisdom" is merely a conventional expression. In ultimate reality, there is neither a practitioner nor something to be practiced upon. Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, apart from the Perfection of Wisdom, is there any other Prajna?

Asked: "Bhagavan, is there no dharma whatsoever that is used to practice the Perfection of Wisdom? This is because if the emptiness of the Perfection of Wisdom is not used to practice the Perfection of Wisdom, then are there some other dharmas that are used to practice the Perfection of Wisdom?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, it is not so." This is because, in ultimate truth, all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, so there is no other dharma that is used to practice the Perfection of Wisdom. Asked: "Bhagavan, what is it then? Does the Perfection of Wisdom practice the Perfection of Wisdom?" This is because, since there is no other dharma apart from the Perfection of Wisdom that is used to practice the Perfection of Wisdom, is it the Perfection of Wisdom itself that practices the Perfection of Wisdom? The Bhagavan replied: "It is not so." This is because, in ultimate truth, the Perfection of Wisdom itself is also empty of inherent existence, so it does not practice itself. Asked: "Bhagavan, what is it then? Does emptiness practice emptiness?" This is because, since other dharmas apart from the Perfection of Wisdom do not practice the Perfection of Wisdom, and the Perfection of Wisdom itself does not practice the Perfection of Wisdom, then when both the agent and the object of practice are empty, does emptiness practice emptiness? The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, it is not so." This is because the term 'emptiness' refers to the absence of entity, and the absence of entity cannot practice the absence of entity. Asked: "Bhagavan, does emptiness practice emptiness apart from emptiness?" This is because, since the practitioner itself does not practice emptiness, does emptiness practice something other than emptiness? The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, it is not so." This is because all dharmas are of one taste in ultimate truth, which is emptiness, so there is no dharma that is not emptiness. Asked: "Bhagavan, what is it then? Does form practice the Perfection of Wisdom?"
