Through the power of understanding, one knows that all phenomena are empty in nature. By practicing and familiarizing oneself with this, one abides in emptiness. This is what is taught. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, even when not in meditative equipoise, directs the mind towards its object. This means that having become the master of calm abiding, one does not directly realize emptiness through a one-sided concentration of tranquility. Instead, through insight, one places the mind on the phenomena to be observed without attachment. This is what is taught. Therefore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not completely degenerate from the dharmas of the path to enlightenment, nor will they realize the exhaustion of defilements. This means that by abiding in insight in this way, one does not degenerate from the dharmas of the path to enlightenment, nor does one realize Nirvana. This is the meaning. Why is this so? From "Why is this so?" to "This is not the time to realize it, one should know this well," the reason for not realizing Nirvana like the Shravakas is explained. It is because with the great wisdom of the union of calm abiding and insight, when practicing and abiding in the dharmas of the path to enlightenment, one knows that these dharmas are merely to be known, and ultimately there is no real entity. Therefore, it is not to be realized. This is because of knowing. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, they know that this is the time to practice the Prajnaparamita. From "This is the time to practice the Prajnaparamita" to "This is not the time to realize the wisdom of the Pratyekabuddhas," it is explained that the previously stated non-degeneration from the dharmas of the path to enlightenment and non-realization of the exhaustion of defilements are further elaborated by distinguishing which dharmas of the path to enlightenment are not degenerated from and which dharmas of the exhaustion of defilements are not realized. That is, one should contemplate that the practice of the six paramitas and other pure dharmas are to be known, but not for the purpose of attaining the fruits of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. This is what is taught. This is all

The phrase "one should examine the time of not abandoning the attainment of omniscience" means that if one manifests the fruit of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha, one will abandon omniscience in all aspects, and one should not do so. Subhuti, therefore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he becomes fully familiar with emptiness and acts through emptiness, up to the point of "not manifesting the state of an Arhat, not manifesting Solitary Enlightenment." This is the detailed explanation by the Blessed One in response to Subhuti's previous question of "how does one not manifest emptiness while abiding in emptiness?" and it summarizes the meaning of what was said. It is taught that merely familiarizing oneself with and habituating oneself to the three doors of liberation and other dharmas through wisdom, and abiding in them, is not manifesting the undefiled dharmas like Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Subhuti, for example, a person who is brave and skilled, up to the point of "no matter what signless samadhi is manifested, one will not abide in the state of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha," is an example of a Bodhisattva practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, possessing skillful means, who understands all dharmas as emptiness and does not manifest the extinction of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, illustrated by a brave, skilled, and skillful person; the other words are merely repetition. The sixty-four arts refer to being skilled in various skillful means, various methods of defense, various tools of craftsmanship, and various methods of livelihood. Such a brave person, having gone into a very terrifying wilderness, even if enemies appear, can, through bravery, skill, and skillful means, rescue his parents, wife, and children from fear and place them in safety. He himself will not be harmed by enemies, nor will he harm the enemies. Similarly, a Bodhisattva who possesses skillful means will also generate immeasurable loving-kindness towards all sentient beings.

, having perfected the six perfections. Abiding in the three doors of liberation, one should also become familiar with the purpose of attaining omniscience. And one does not grasp at their characteristics. It also shows that one does not manifest the signless samadhi that would cause one to fall into the state of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha. This means that the great hero is an example of the skillful means of a Bodhisattva. Parents and children are examples of all sentient beings. The many enemies who oppose are examples of the unwholesome spiritual friends of the Lesser Vehicle. Towns, cities, villages, and regions are examples of the Bodhisattva's path being easy and without the danger of falling into the state of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha, and should be understood as such. Subhuti, for example, just as a bird flies in the sky and does not fall to the ground, from "practicing immeasurable Buddha-dharmas" to "attaining omniscience," it is said that the example of a Bodhisattva who skillfully practices the Perfection of Wisdom and abides in non-abiding nirvana is taken from the example of a bird flying in the sky. A bird flying in the sky does not settle in the middle of the sky, nor does it rely solely on the ground like other animals. Similarly, a Bodhisattva with skillful means, because of practicing the three doors of liberation, does not manifest the state of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha. Although he practices various Bodhisattva practices with skillful means, he does not abide in samsara like ordinary beings. Thus, not abiding in either samsara or nirvana is called non-abiding nirvana. Subhuti, for example, just as a powerful person becomes a master of archery, from "when those roots of virtue are fully matured into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment" to "then, he realizes the true and supreme limit," it is said that the example of a Bodhisattva practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, who does not work for his own benefit until he has achieved the complete benefit of others, is taken from the example of a powerful person becoming a master of archery.
