Asked whether merit and so on would increase or decrease in that case. The venerable Subhuti replied: "Killing during the day and killing in a dream, thinking, 'I have killed, it is good that I have killed!' and reflecting in this way after waking up." The venerable Saradvatiputra, what do you say about this? This is to show that in conventional truth, there is a difference in the maturation of the fruits of the two actions done in dreams and when not asleep, so he asked Sariputra. He replied: "Venerable Subhuti, without an object, karma does not arise; without an object, mind does not arise." This is to show that there is a difference in the maturation of the fruits of actions done when not asleep and actions done in dreams, followed by rejoicing after waking up. Actions done when not asleep, because they have an object, whatever good or bad is done, the maturation of the fruits will occur in the same way. Actions done in dreams, rejoicing upon waking up, because there is no object, there is only the maturation of rejoicing. There is no maturation of the actual actions done in the dream, this is what is being shown. Venerable Subhuti said: "Venerable Saradvatiputra, it is just so," and so on. "Therefore, Venerable Saradvatiputra, karma arises with an object, and not without an object. Mind arises with an object, and not without an object." In between, Subhuti rejoiced that Sariputra's explanation that there is a difference between actions done in dreams and when not asleep is true, and he clarified that very point. When not asleep, seeing and so on have an object, so the maturation of the fruits will occur in the same way. Seeing and hearing in dreams are not like that, that is the meaning. He said: "Venerable Subhuti, all actions and all objects are peaceful." If the Blessed One said this, how can karma arise with an object, and not without an object? How can mind arise with an object, and not without an object? This is about dreams and sleep.

It is also said that there is a difference in the karma done when one has not awakened from unconsciousness, which is also based on the fact that each individual ordinary person holds onto names and forms. It was asked of Subhuti in order to show that this is a conventional teaching and not an ultimate teaching. Subhuti said: 'O son of Sharadvati, the venerable one, karma arises with an object, having taken hold of names and forms. It is not without an object. Mind arises with an object. It is not without an object.' This means that the difference in karma in dreams and when one has not awakened from sleep is also based on the fact that each individual child has an object. It is to show that this is a conventional teaching and not that there is a difference in the ultimate sense. It was said, 'O venerable Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva gives alms in a dream, from giving alms to dedicating it to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, since other actions done in a dream have no object, there is no ripening fruit. If some pure Bodhisattva Mahasattvas practice the six perfections in a dream and dedicate that root of virtue to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, will there be a result for that?' This was asked by Shariputra. Subhuti said: 'O son of Sharadvati, the venerable one,' from 'Ask him, and he will answer,' to 'Ask him, and he will answer,' is because some of those present in that assembly do not believe what Subhuti says, but if the Bodhisattva Maitreya answers and speaks, they will believe and benefit, so he praised the qualities of Maitreya, saying that he is now present here. Ask him, which shows that I did not answer, but had someone else answer. Then, the venerable son of Sharadvati said these words to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya, from 'Ask him, and he will answer,' which shows that Shariputra repeated the words of Subhuti to the Bodhisattva Maitreya. Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya
