Therefore, that which is without arising or ceasing is completely accomplished without changing from the nature of suchness, that is its meaning. Subhuti, if suchness remains as it is, wouldn't it be permanent and unchanging? This question is asked to show that it is different from the eternalist views of the heretics. The answer is: "Bhagavan, it is not so." The heretics see permanence from existing things, but here, it is said that suchness remains as it is without changing from non-existent things, therefore it is not like the permanence seen by the heretics. Suchness is profound! This means that like this, not changing and being completely accomplished, and also not being permanent, that is not the object of those with characteristics, therefore it is shown to be profound. Is the mind also like that? This is asking, just as suchness is profound, is the mind also profound? The answer is: "Bhagavan, it is not so." This means that the conventional mind, which is subject to arising and ceasing, is not so profound. Is the mind separate from suchness? This question is asked from the perspective of ultimate truth. The answer is: "Bhagavan, it is not so." This means that in ultimate truth, the mind is not separate from suchness either. Does the mind have suchness? And, does suchness have mind? This is asking, since the mind is not separate from suchness, are these two existing as the basis and the supported? The answer is: "Bhagavan, it is not so." This means that these two are of one taste in the nature of emptiness, therefore the mind is not separate from suchness, and it is not that two real things exist, one as the basis and the supported of the other. Does suchness not truly see suchness? This means that like this, the mind and suchness are of one taste in emptiness, and there is no difference in the nature of suchness, therefore it shows that there is no separation between the object and the subject. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, what do you think? Whoever practices like that, that

That which is called the practice of Prajñāpāramitā is the realization of such profound Dharma that is without arising and ceasing, and this shows that it is the practice of Prajñāpāramitā. What is it that is practiced in that way, where is it practiced? This is asked because the practice of Prajñāpāramitā is contrary to grasping at things as real. What is it that is not practiced in that way? This shows that realizing the absence of arising and ceasing in that way is without manifest attachment to things. Why is that? Blessed One, it is because Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas who practice Prajñāpāramitā in this way and abide in Suchness, those who completely transmigrate do not enter or arise. This shows the reason for not practicing anything, and the mind that clings to things as real and discriminates does not arise in the practice of Prajñāpāramitā and abiding in Suchness, which is the meaning of this. Why is that? Blessed One, Suchness does not completely transmigrate anywhere, and there is no transmigration in Suchness itself. This shows the reason why the mind does not transmigrate, because in the ultimate sense, the mind is also the nature of Suchness, and there is no discrimination or transmigration in any Dharma, and by the nature of Suchness there is no transmigration of any Dharma in it, which is what is to be shown. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, where does a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva who practices Prajñāpāramitā practice? This is asking, does he not practice anything? He replied: That is practiced in the ultimate truth where there is no transmigration of duality. This is not not practicing anything, but practicing in the ultimate truth where there is no discrimination between the apprehended and the apprehender, which is the meaning of this. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is not practicing in the ultimate truth practicing in complete transmigration? Is that not practicing in signs? This is asking if one practices in the ultimate truth in that way, will it not become practicing in discrimination and signs? He replied: Blessed One, that

Replied: It is not so. This is merely a verbal expression of acting in the ultimate sense. Indeed, there is no concept of acting, nor is there attachment to characteristics. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Has he destroyed the concept of characteristics? The meaning is, if it is not acting in such a universal way, not acting with attachment to characteristics, then has the concept of characteristics been destroyed? Replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The meaning is, in the ultimate sense, all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, so the concept of characteristics cannot be destroyed either. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, then how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva destroy the concept of characteristics? The meaning is, if the concept of characteristics cannot be destroyed, then how is it that the sutras say that the concept of characteristics has been completely abandoned? Replied: Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, he does not think: I should destroy characteristics, or I should destroy non-characteristics. The meaning is, not generating the discriminating thoughts of clinging to characteristics and clinging to non-characteristics, not even thinking in this way, is the destruction of the concept of characteristics. Blessed One, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices this Prajnaparamita, from "in order to realize the emptiness of the self-nature of all dharmas" to the end, means that although in the ultimate sense, by realizing that all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, there are no more discriminating thoughts and clinging to characteristics, in the conventional sense, with skillful means, he perfects the ten powers of the Tathagata and other qualities, and thereby manifests the unexcelled perfect enlightenment, but he does not regard any dharma as real or unreal. From "abiding in the emptiness of self-nature" to "Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, abiding in the three samadhis,"
