"Is every place not empty?" This refers to Subhūti asking in order to initiate the topic of explaining that all dharmas are emptiness. The Blessed One said, "Subhūti, what do you think? Haven't I said that all dharmas are empty?" This means that just as the five aggregates are empty, all dharmas are also empty, I have said so. The request saying, "Blessed One, the Tathāgata has said that all dharmas are empty" up to "Blessed One, therefore, in these dharmas, from the ultimate point of view, no difference in letters is seen," refers to all dharmas being empty in their own nature, so there is no distinction in meaning and words by number and measure, this is the request. The Blessed One said, "Subhūti, it is just so. It is just so. In these dharmas, no difference in meaning or letters is seen," means that in order for all the retinue to believe the meaning requested by Subhūti, he taught that it is true. Subhūti, "So-called inexhaustible" to "So-called nirvāṇa, this is unspeakable, but the Tathāgata speaks of it," refers to the different names of emptiness such as inexhaustible and immeasurable, which are unspeakable in the ultimate truth, but the Tathāgata, with great compassion, in order to guide and tame sentient beings, establishes names such as inexhaustible, immeasurable, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-action, unborn, detachment, non-cessation, and nirvāṇa in the conventional truth to explain. So-called inexhaustible to so-called nirvāṇa, this is said to be the teaching of the Tathāgata being realized, refers to a detailed explanation of the meaning mentioned above, in order to lead sentient beings into the realm of the ultimate truth, the Tathāgata provisionally establishes names such as inexhaustible in the conventional truth to explain. The request says, "Blessed One, the dharmatā of all dharmas has been taught by the Tathāgata, and this dharmatā is also unspeakable, it is truly wonderful!"

That is to say, in reality, all dharmas are empty of their own nature. Although there is no entity, names and characteristics are falsely established to teach for the sake of skillfully guiding sentient beings in conventional truth. This is Subhuti's praise to the Bhagavan. As I understand the meaning of what the Bhagavan said, 'Bhagavan, all dharmas are unspeakable,' this is a brief summary of the meaning mentioned above, meaning that in reality, all dharmas are empty of their own nature, so they cannot be expressed by names and words. The Bhagavan taught, 'Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, all dharmas are unspeakable.' This is to make the retinue believe the meaning of Subhuti's question, so he taught in this way. 'Subhuti, whatever is unspeakable of all dharmas, that is emptiness, and there is no speech in emptiness.' This means that in reality, all dharmas are empty of their own nature, so they cannot be expressed by names and words. 'Emptiness cannot be spoken.' This is to emphasize the meaning that emptiness cannot be spoken. 'Question, Bhagavan, is there no increase or decrease in the meaning of the unspeakable?' This is because Subhuti asked in order to explain in detail the meaning that in reality all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and there is no increase or decrease. The Bhagavan taught, 'Subhuti, it is not so. Subhuti, there is no increase or decrease in the meaning of the unspeakable.' This means that the unspeakable refers to emptiness, and emptiness will not be increased by the dharmas belonging to the aspect of purification, nor will it be decreased by the dharmas belonging to the aspect of afflictions. This is a brief explanation. 'Question, Bhagavan, if there is no increase or decrease in the meaning of the unspeakable, then, Bhagavan, is there no increase or decrease in the perfection of generosity?' And so on, 'Bhagavan, are the Buddha's dharmas not...'

From "there will be no increase or decrease," if all dharmas are empty of inherent existence and inexpressible, and there is no increase or decrease, then all pure dharmas such as the six perfections will also have no increase or decrease, thus Subhuti inquired. "Bhagavan, if that is the case, then there will be no perfection of generosity," up to "Bhagavan, if that is the case, then there will be no unshared qualities of the Buddha." Because all dharmas are empty of inherent existence and also inexpressible, and there is no increase or decrease, then all pure dharmas such as the six perfections will also be non-existent, thus Subhuti asked. If those dharmas are non-existent, then omniscience will also be non-existent. If omniscience is non-existent, who will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Because if there are no pure dharmas such as the six perfections, then the result of those dharmas, which is omniscience, will also be non-existent. If that is the case, then no one will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, which would be a fault, thus Subhuti asked. Subhuti's inquiry in this way was also to dispel the doubts of the assembly, and to explain in detail that although in the ultimate truth all dharmas are empty of inherent existence and inexpressible, in the conventional truth, if one practices with skillful means and dedicates the merit, there will be no absence of results. The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, it is just so, it is just so. For the inexpressible meaning, there is no increase or decrease." This was said by the Bhagavan to assure the assembly that Subhuti's previous question was true. "Subhuti, if a bodhisattva mahasattva with skillful means practices the Perfection of Wisdom..."
