The Blessed One responded, "Indeed, it is so." Why is that? Because, in this way, he has attained all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and the incomparable, immeasurable, and boundless wisdom. Abiding in these wisdoms, he manifests individually correct wisdom for the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. No matter how the world, including gods, humans, and asuras, asks, he can manifest individually correct wisdom, and the answers will never be exhausted. Therefore, this shows the reason why the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva possesses great merits. The non-retrogressing Bodhisattva is able to correctly understand various dharmas, correctly understand various meanings, correctly understand the meanings of various words, and correctly understand various eloquence. This wisdom is not possessed by Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Because he has attained such wisdom, no matter what dharma, what meaning, or what meaning of words is asked by all beings in the world, including gods, humans, and asuras, he can answer, and his eloquence will never be exhausted. Therefore, he possesses great merits, and that is its meaning. Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, even in as many kalpas as the sands of the Ganges, in what way, by what method, and by what characteristics does he explain the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva?" From "having the power to show the form, method, and characteristics of the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva" to "Please explain well the profound places that accomplish the perfection of all-knowingness," this shows the greatness of the merits of the non-retrogressing Bodhisattvas, and that they have sufficient reasons. Furthermore, if one can fully understand all the dharmas purified by such great merits, then one can realize the profound dharma. Which profound dharmas must be realized in order to possess such merits? Subhuti requested the Blessed One to explain these profound dharmas. The Blessed One responded: "Subhuti, well done, well done!"

O, Subhuti, it is excellent, excellent that you, for the sake of the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, ask about the Tathagata's profound, profound places. This is Subhuti requesting the exposition of the profound Dharma. The meaning is to praise Subhuti for coming specifically so that the retinue may have faith. Subhuti, the term 'profound' is a synonym for emptiness, and from that to the synonym for the sphere of reality, the meaning of profound is shown. Emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-fabrication, detachment, cessation, nirvana and peace, suchness, the limit of reality, and the sphere of reality are all synonyms for emptiness. Because these are not understood by the minds of those who have objects of focus, such as the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, they are nominally designated as profound. The meaning is that, Subhuti, like this, those synonyms for nirvana are those called 'profound, profound places.' This is a brief summary of the meaning of the words mentioned above. In short, realizing all phenomena to be of the nature of emptiness, the nature of non-abiding nirvana, which is not the domain of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, is named 'profound' and explained. The question is, since it is a synonym for nirvana, is it not a synonym for all phenomena? This is Subhuti's question, because all phenomena such as form, in ultimate truth, are without substance, and their Dharma-nature is also profound. The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, the term 'profound' is also a synonym for all phenomena. From 'Subhuti, all-knowingness is also profound' to 'Bodhi is also profound,' all phenomena, from form and so on up to all-knowingness, in ultimate truth, do not exist in the way they appear and are spoken of, but are merely suchness. Because it is not the domain of objects of focus, it is nirvana.

It is shown that not only is it profound alone, but all those dharmas are also profound. Subhuti, how is it said that form is profound, and how is it said that all-knowingness is profound? In between is the discussion raised about how all dharmas such as form are profound. Just as the Suchness of form is, so form is profound, and just as the Suchness of all-knowingness is, so all-knowingness is profound. In between, all dharmas such as form are ultimately only the nature of Suchness. That Suchness is also not an object of attachment from the perspective of characteristics. Because it is not the object of those who have attachments, it is shown to be profound. "O Lord, what is the Suchness of form?" and "O Lord, what is all-knowingness?" In between, Subhuti asked in order to explain in detail what the Suchness of form and so on is like. The Lord said: "In the Suchness of form, there is no form. Apart from form, there is no Suchness. The Suchness of form is like that." And, "Subhuti, in the Suchness of Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, there is no Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. Apart from Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, there is no Suchness. Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment is like that." In between, it is shown in detail what the Suchness of all dharmas is like. The so-called Suchness is the Dharmata of dharmas, the nature of emptiness. It does not exist in things such as form. It is also not in things other than form, it is shown. "O Lord, in that way, with skillful means, the irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattva also prevents from form. Also shows Nirvana," and also prevents from the Buddha's unmixed dharmas. Also shows Nirvana. Worldly and transmundane, common and uncommon, contaminated and
