One should abide in the first bhumi of a Bodhisattva, and having abided in the Bodhisattva bhumi, one should also fully ripen sentient beings, purify the Buddha-field, generate the wisdom of all-knowingness, abandon all afflictions connected by habitual tendencies, make life complete, and make the sacred Dharma abide. For these, I myself should practice, and I should also cause others to practice. Through praising the merits of others practicing these, and rejoicing accordingly, it is taught that one should abide in the complete application. Thus, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should train in the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means. Thus, above, it was taught that a Bodhisattva should abide in the complete application, which is also, in conventional truth, for the applications from the ten virtues and so on up to making the sacred Dharma abide, I myself should practice, and I should also cause others to practice. One should also praise and rejoice in the merits of practicing these. In ultimate truth, one should also abide in these in a way that does not discriminate or fixate, and it is taught that one should train in having wisdom and skillful means. By learning in this way and abiding in this way, his form will become without obstruction, and so on, which teaches that the result of abiding in the complete application in this way is that there is no obstruction to all dharmas, and there is no grasping to all dharmas. Among them, from "his form will become without obstruction" to "the abiding of the sacred Dharma will become without obstruction," it is taught that if one abides in the complete application in this way, one will attain the wisdom that is without obstruction to all dharmas. Why is that? Because, from the beginning of the past, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva did not grasp form, and so on, up to not grasping all-knowingness, which teaches the reason why there is no obstruction to all dharmas such as form. Because in previous lives he also realized that all dharmas such as form are without substance, therefore, because he did not grasp substance and characteristics, there is no obstruction to those dharmas.

It means "benefit transformation." Why is that? For example, whatever form cannot be completely grasped is called non-form, and so on, whatever omniscience cannot be completely grasped is called non-omniscience. Because all phenomena such as form cannot be completely grasped, it is not because there is something that cannot be completely grasped, but because in the ultimate truth, all phenomena are empty in nature. Since phenomena such as form are not real, they cannot be completely grasped. This is what is to be explained. When this abode of the Bodhisattva is proclaimed, two thousand Bodhisattvas attain the forbearance of non-origination. This refers to the Dharma of abiding in perfect aspiration and abiding in perfect application, which has great benefits. After two thousand Bodhisattvas attain the forbearance of non-origination, they abide in the eighth Bodhisattva ground, the irreversible ground. This is what is to be explained. The thirty-ninth chapter of the extensive explanation of the Hundred Thousand Prajnaparamita Sutra is complete. Chapter Forty, the Chapter on Explaining the Signs of the Path of Application. "Having spoken thus, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Bhagavan as follows," and so on, begins from the occasion of previously proclaiming the irreversibility of the Bodhisattva. Since there is no regression in the ultimate truth, what is the sign of non-regression? In order to distinguish what the sign of the non-regressing Bodhisattva is in the conventional truth, Subhuti asked, and the Bhagavan explained in detail the sign of non-regression. Bhagavan, what is the aspect of the irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattva? What is the manner? What is the sign? How should we know that this Bodhisattva Mahasattva is irreversible? The so-called aspect, manner, and sign refer to which signs of behavior can be used to know that this is an irreversible Bodhisattva?

It should be known as a category of manifest signs. Subhuti, here, all the explanations about the grounds of ordinary beings, the grounds of hearers, the grounds of solitary realizers, the grounds of bodhisattvas, and the grounds of tathagatas, are immutable in suchness, without discrimination, non-dual, and cannot be made into two. It means that, ultimately, all dharmas are of one taste in the nature of suchness. Because they do not change from suchness to anything else, the forms called the grounds of ordinary beings, hearers, solitary realizers, bodhisattvas, and tathagatas are shown to have no distinction in appearance, manner, and characteristics. That is, suchness enters as it is, without discriminating suchness. Thus, it enters without discrimination. Entering in this way means hearing suchness as it is and transcending it. They have no doubt about suchness, whether it is single, both, or neither. It means that the irreversible bodhisattva also hears and realizes that, ultimately, all dharmas are of one taste in suchness, without any distinction, without discriminating differences, without clinging to characteristics, and without any doubt. That is, not clinging to characteristics and not doubting are the appearance, manner, and characteristics of an irreversible bodhisattva. This is not spoken randomly, but speaks meaningfully, not meaninglessly. Not looking at what others have done or not done, but seeking good speech. It means that, from the perspective of verbal expression, the appearance, manner, and characteristics of an irreversible bodhisattva are shown: not speaking meaningless idle words, not ridiculing or slandering others, not being jealous of the good deeds done by others, but praising their virtues. It should be known that through these appearances, manners, and characteristics, an irreversible bodhisattva can be recognized. Question: Blessed One, with what appearance, what manner, and what characteristics should a bodhisattva mahasattva be recognized as irreversible?
