Furthermore, when there are gods who dwell in the realm of form, they asked the Blessed One as follows, up to the point where it says, "The arising of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is difficult." This means that since all phenomena are without substance and without object of focus, those who desire to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, such as the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, who have objects of focus, are unable to do so. The Blessed One taught with skillful means, up to the point where it says, "Why is that? Sons of the gods, it is because all phenomena are utterly pure." This means that the meaning of the gods' request is that the Blessed One clearly explained it in order to make the retinue firmly believe. Then, the venerable Subhuti asked the Blessed One as follows, up to the point where it says, "It is not difficult to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." This means that if phenomena had substance, it would be difficult to realize their lack of substance, but it is not difficult to know that what is without substance is without substance, as Subhuti asked. Why is that? Blessed One, it is like this, up to the point where it says, "There is no such phenomenon to be awakened to." This means that the reason why it is not difficult to realize the lack of substance in all phenomena that are without substance has been shown. Why is that? Blessed One, it is like this, all phenomena are emptiness, up to the point where it says, "Blessed One, therefore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva strives to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." This means that all phenomena belonging to the side of purification and the side of affliction are empty of inherent existence. In order to increase the phenomena of purification and decrease the side of affliction, the phenomena to be cultivated and practiced, such as the six perfections, up to the all-knowingness, are also known to be empty of inherent existence, and the causes to be known are also empty of inherent existence. Because they are without substance, what is without substance is without substance.
