Asked, with what kind of mind does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva contemplate this profound Prajnaparamita? The Blessed One replied, "To initiate the contemplation of suchness as emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, etc., Subhuti inquired. The Blessed One said: 'Subhuti, with a mind attached to emptiness'... 'even Subhuti, with a mind attached to emanation, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva contemplates this profound Prajnaparamita.' This passage refers to regarding things like the three doors of liberation, space, no birth, no cessation, no defilement, no purification, suchness, the realm of dharma, the ultimate reality, equality, the inconceivable realm, non-manifestation, dreams, images, echoes, mirages, illusions, and emanations, which are without substance, as substantial, and grasping at characteristics. Similarly, this profound Prajnaparamita should not be contemplated by clinging to substance and characteristics. Asked: 'Blessed One, with a mind attached to emptiness'... 'does one contemplate even all-knowingness?' This passage is to distinguish the context in which it is said that all dharmas, including form, should not be regarded as substantial and should not be grasped as characteristics. Therefore, just as one does not conceptually think about the three doors of liberation and other insubstantial dharmas, if one does not conceptually think about Prajnaparamita either, then does one grasp at substance and characteristics and conceptually think about the dharmas from form up to all-knowingness?' The Blessed One replied: 'Subhuti, that Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not contemplate form'... 'does not contemplate even all-knowingness.' This passage means that all dharmas, including form, are like space and other things, and because they are not objects of contemplation, one does not conceptually think about any of them.

Explanation of the ground. Why is that? Subhuti, because in this way, whatever is complete knowledge, is not made by anyone. By "not made," etc., it shows that all phenomena such as form have no substance, and it shows the reason why they are not objects of discrimination. The meaning of "not made by anyone" is that complete knowledge has no substance in the ultimate sense, so it is not made from nothing by anyone. The term "not made" is the opposite of made from something that exists into something that does not exist. It does not come from anywhere, it does not go anywhere, it does not abide in any direction, it does not abide in any place, it does not abide anywhere, which shows that because there is no substance, there is no going, coming, or abiding. That which cannot be counted and whose going and coming cannot be discerned, cannot be fully awakened by anyone, which means that because there is no substance, it cannot be counted, and there is no going or coming, so the nature of any form etc. cannot be known, and no form etc. can know it. Therefore, in order to clearly show that meaning, it is said, "Not by form, not by feeling," etc., meaning that the nature of any phenomenon from form etc. up to complete knowledge cannot be known, and no phenomenon can know it. Why is that? Because form itself is also complete knowledge.

Since both form and all-knowingness are one in nature of suchness, one cannot know the other, or be known as one knows an object to be known. This is the meaning. Just as it is explained for form, it should also be applied up to the unshared qualities of the Buddha. This is the thirty-eighth chapter from the extensive explanation of the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom. Thirty-ninth Chapter: Establishing the Trainings of the Bodhicitta. Then, the sons of the gods of the desire realm, the form realm, and the form realm, holding many divine substances of sandalwood powder, divine flowers of utpala, lotuses, kumuda, and pundarika, scattered them upon the Blessed One Gana Vyuha Loka, and so forth. Because the Blessed One said that all phenomena, such as form, are non-different in nature from all-knowingness, and are one; and that the suchness of all phenomena, such as form, and the suchness of all-knowingness are the same suchness, being non-dual and non-different. The sons of the gods, understanding the meaning of what was said, were satisfied by the explanation of such a profound meaning, and with divine offerings offered to the Blessed One. The Blessed One repeated the words spoken above, and after requesting, showed that this profound Perfection of Wisdom, because it is difficult to see, should be understood by the wise, but is difficult for all the world to believe. The Blessed One said thus, this profound Perfection of Wisdom of the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, says thus: Form itself is all-knowingness, and all-knowingness is form, and so forth, up to the unshared qualities of the Buddha are all-knowingness, and all-knowingness is the unshared qualities of the Buddha. This is because, previously, the Blessed One had said that all phenomena are of one taste in the nature of all-knowingness, and the sons of the gods repeated and requested it, and then,
