This is a question about the reasons stated by Subhuti. Subhuti said: Kausika, because the object of all-knowingness is infinite, therefore the perfection of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is infinite. This is because, the so-called "Prajnaparamita," is because the object is infinite, so it shows that Prajnaparamita is infinite. The object of all-knowingness that Bodhisattvas want to objectify is, in the ultimate truth, the nature of non-substantiality, so there is no limit of birth and no limit of cessation, so it is infinite. Prajnaparamita is no different from it in the ultimate truth, so it also shows that Prajnaparamita is also infinite. Kausika, furthermore, because the object of Dharma is infinite, therefore the perfection of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas 'DI' (Tibetan 'DI' is suspected to be an error) is infinite. The so-called "Prajnaparamita" and so on, is because the object of Dharmadhatu is infinite, so it shows that Prajnaparamita is infinite. The Dharmadhatu that Bodhisattvas want to objectify is non-conceptual, and in the ultimate truth, it is the nature of non-substantiality, so it has no limit of birth and cessation, similarly, Prajnaparamita is also no different from it, so it also shows that it is infinite. Kausika, furthermore, because the object of Suchness is infinite, therefore the perfection of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas 'DI' (Tibetan 'DI' is suspected to be an error) is infinite. The so-called "Prajnaparamita" and so on, is because the object of Suchness is infinite, so it shows that Prajnaparamita is infinite. The Suchness that Bodhisattvas want to objectify is, in the ultimate truth, the nature of non-substantiality. Therefore, it has no limit of birth and no limit of cessation, similarly, Prajnaparamita is also no different from it, so it also shows that it is infinite.

The term "immeasurable" and so forth indicates that because sentient beings are immeasurable, the Prajñāpāramitā is also taught to be immeasurable. Bodhisattvas, for the sake of which sentient beings do they practice the Prajñāpāramitā? All those sentient beings, in ultimate reality, are without substance, therefore they have neither a prior nor a posterior limit, they are immeasurable. Similarly, the Prajñāpāramitā, in ultimate reality, is also of the nature of being without substance, therefore it is immeasurable, this is what is being taught. Subhūti said: Kauśika, what do you think? The term "sentient being, sentient being," is it a designation of which dharma? This is the question posed to Indra to lead him to explain the reason why, in ultimate reality, sentient beings are without substance. Indra said: Venerable Subhūti, it is neither a designation of dharma, nor a designation of non-dharma. Like this, the term "sentient being, sentient being" is merely a name temporarily assigned, a name assigned without substance, a name assigned without an object of reference. This is to show that in ultimate reality, sentient beings are without substance, therefore they are immeasurable. If there were some substance called "dharma," then it could be said to be a designation of that dharma. But in ultimate reality, there is no substance whatsoever called "dharma," therefore it cannot be said that these sentient beings are a designation of that dharma. Similarly, since the existence of dharma is not established, the non-dharma that is established in contrast to it also does not exist, therefore it cannot be said to be a designation of non-dharma. Therefore, these beings called "sentient beings" are, in ultimate reality, without substance and without an object of reference, they are merely names temporarily assigned in conventional reality, this is what is being taught. Subhūti said: Kauśika, what do you think? From this Prajñāpāramitā, is there anything that is spoken of as a sentient being? And so forth, meaning that from this Prajñāpāramitā, sentient beings are not spoken of as existing in ultimate reality. Subhūti said: Kauśika, where there is nothing spoken of as a sentient being, is it said that there are immeasurable sentient beings? This is because, in this way, from this Prajñāpāramitā, the substance of sentient beings is not spoken of as existing.
