From the perspective of the ripening of karma, gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings are merely distinct designations. However, from the ultimate point of view, since there is no karma or ripening of karma, the five realms of existence are indistinguishable. This is what is being explained. It is said: Venerable Subhuti, will the unborn dharma arise? Or will the born dharma arise? This is because, in order to elaborate on the reasons why worldly and transworldly dharmas do not arise from the unborn, nor do they arise from the born, Shariputra asked Subhuti. Unborn dharmas have no substance, like a rabbit's horn, so there is no reason for them to arise. Born dharmas, because they already exist, do not need to be born again, so he asked in this way. Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, I do not think that the unborn dharma will arise, nor do I think that the born dharma will arise. This is because, from the ultimate point of view, both birth and non-birth are empty of inherent existence, so neither will arise, this is a brief statement. It is said: Venerable Subhuti, what is it that you do not think the unborn dharma will arise? This is because Shariputra asked Subhuti in order to specify and distinguish what is meant by the term "unborn dharma." Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, I do not think that form, which is unborn and empty of inherent existence, will arise, and so on, up to: Venerable Shariputra, I do not think that omniscience, which is unborn and empty of inherent existence, will arise. This is Subhuti's answer to Shariputra's question of what it is that he does not think the unborn dharma will arise. All worldly dharmas, such as the five aggregates, and all transworldly dharmas, such as the six perfections, up to omniscience, are, from the ultimate point of view, empty of inherent existence, so they are not thought to arise. This is what is being explained. It is said: Venerable Subhuti, what is it that you do not think the born dharma will arise? Is it the born

Thus, Shariputra asked Subhuti about the Dharma that Venerable Subhuti had previously said, "Also does not wish to be born," in order to have it explained by naming it. He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, from "The birth of my own form, emptiness of nature, does not wish to be born" to "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I am the birth of all-knowingness, emptiness of nature, does not wish to be born," the answer to the question of what Dharma's birth does not wish to be born is the worldly Dharmas such as the five aggregates, and the six paramitas, etc., up to all-knowingness. All the supramundane Dharmas are nominally established as birth in the conventional sense, but all of them in the ultimate sense, because of the emptiness of nature, do not wish to be born, as explained. Thus, if it has been shown that the nature of birth and non-birth of worldly and supramundane Dharmas such as form is unborn in the ultimate sense, then after that, in order to show that the nature of so-called birth and non-birth is also unborn, he said: Venerable Subhuti, is birth born? Or is non-birth born? Shariputra asked Subhuti in this way. He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, birth is also not born, and non-birth is also not born. It is explained that so-called birth and non-birth are only expressed as nominal terms in the conventional sense, but in the ultimate sense, neither of them is established as real, so they are not born. Why is that? Venerable Sharadvatiputra, thus, the Dharma of what is called birth and what is called non-birth is neither associated nor unassociated, without form, without sight, without obstruction, thus, without characteristics, they are of one characteristic. Thus, it is explained that the Dharma of so-called birth and non-birth is not real in the ultimate sense, and the reason for non-birth is shown. The so-called non-association means that the real existence of things arising from the mind is not shown. The so-called non-unassociation means the real existence of actions that are not associated with the mind.

English
The meaning is that it is not existent in the way that existence is. The term 'formless' indicates that it is not an existent entity like the aggregates of form. The term 'invisible' means that it cannot be shown as the nature of color and shape. The term 'unobstructed' indicates that it is not an existent entity with obstructions like the eye faculty and so on. Thus, being without characteristics, they are of one characteristic, which means that, in that way, whether it is with or without, it is not the characteristic of any of the forms and so on, and in the ultimate sense, it is of one characteristic as the nature of emptiness. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, therefore, birth does not arise, and non-birth does not arise either. This means that Subhuti summarized the meaning explained by the Blessed One, showing that the reason for non-birth is such that, therefore, the so-called birth and non-birth, for those dharmas, there is no birth in the ultimate sense. Sharadvatiputra said: Venerable Subhuti, do you dare to speak of the unarisen dharma, the unarisen dharma? This means that, in that way, the so-called dharmas of birth and non-birth, in the ultimate sense, are without substance. If it is unarisen, then what is there to say with the word 'unarisen'? Venerable Subhuti, do you also dare to speak of the non-birth of those unarisen dharmas? This means that the forms and so on, those possessors of the unarisen dharma, are also without substance in the ultimate sense. If it is unarisen, then is it also permissible to say that there is no birth for such insubstantial things? Subhuti said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, do you dare to speak of the unarisen dharma, the unarisen dharma? Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I do not dare to speak of the unarisen dharma, the unarisen dharma. This is Shariputra's answer. The dharmas of birth and non-birth are without substance in the ultimate sense, those are unarisen! What I say is merely to express the meaning in conventional terms.
