This shows that in the ultimate sense, these are not considered to exist. The so-called "attainment" and "comprehension," attainment refers to the attainment of the fruit of stream-enterer, etc.; comprehension refers to the realization of the nature of the noble path. This shows that in the ultimate sense, these attainments and comprehensions are also not considered to exist. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I do not consider that the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing austerities. This is because when the Bodhisattva obtains the forbearance of non-arising dharmas, he does not consider the object of austerities to exist. In order to clearly show that meaning, it is said that the Bodhisattva Mahasattva also does not practice with the concept of austerities, etc. This shows that in the ultimate sense, the object of austerities is not considered to exist; in the conventional sense, also because of the great compassion that arises in all sentient beings with the concept of parents, etc., the concept of austerities does not arise. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates such a thought: Just as the so-called "I, I" is also all, all do not exist and are unattainable, so also generate concepts for external and internal dharmas, and even if such concepts arise, the concept of suffering does not arise. This shows the means of not generating the concept of suffering by realizing that all dharmas are unattainable in the ultimate sense. Just as the self that is conceived by the heretics, when realizing the selflessness of the person, all the selves that are conceived do not exist at all, so also when realizing the selflessness of dharmas, it should also be known that the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, etc., external and internal dharmas, are also all, all do not exist and are unattainable, and thus the concept of suffering does not arise. What is the reason for this? Because, in this way, no dharma is relied upon or attainable. This shows the reason for not generating the concept of suffering, that is, in the ultimate sense, no dharma that would generate the concept of suffering is grasped or attainable. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the Tathagata

It is not desired to have a Tathagata. It is also not desired to have unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, because in the ultimate sense, all dharmas are unborn. The Tathagata and unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment are also of unborn nature, therefore it is not desired to have things exist, this is what is to be expressed. When the Tathagata turns the wheel of Dharma, the unborn Dharma cannot be obtained or should be obtained, because the Blessed One said that all dharmas are unborn from the beginning, if combined, in the ultimate sense, the unborn Dharma also cannot cause the fruits such as stream-enterer to be obtained, and those fruits that should be obtained are also unborn, therefore there is no obtaining or should be obtained, this is what is to be expressed. Shariputra asked the Venerable Subhuti: Do you wish that the stream-enterer and other individuals obtain the nature of non-reality such as the fruit of stream-entry with reality? Or do you wish to obtain with the unborn Dharma? This is asking whether the stream-enterer and other individuals obtain the real things such as the fruit of stream-entry in a non-real way? Because seeing that obtaining non-reality with reality and obtaining reality with non-reality are both unreasonable, so he asked solemnly. Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, I do not wish that way. Nor do I wish to obtain with the unborn Dharma, because obtaining non-reality with reality and obtaining reality with non-reality are both unreasonable, so he answered like this. Shariputra said: Venerable Subhuti, then there is no obtaining, and no realization? This is asking if you do not wish in those two ways, then whether the stream-enterer and other individuals have not obtained the fruit of stream-entry, and have not cultivated the path and realized? Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, there is obtaining,

Also, there is attainment and realization. These two, the so-called "non-existence," refer to the attainment and realization, which are merely nominally designated in worldly terms for the abandonment of afflictions and obscurations of knowledge. It is believed that it is not that one obtains non-existence through something existent, nor does one obtain existence through something non-existent. It is shown in the manner of these two that it is "non-existent." To clarify this very meaning, the venerable Sharadvatiputra, "Attainment and realization are designated by worldly terms," and so on, are taught. Those who cause attainment, such as those who have entered the stream, and those who are to be attained, such as the fruits of entering the stream, are merely conventionally designated and are not truly existent. This is what is shown. It was said, "Venerable Subhuti, attainment and what is to be realized exist in worldly terms. Similarly, are the five destinies also distinct in worldly terms, but not in ultimate reality?" This is to thoroughly explain the previous refutation that the five destinies would also become indistinguishable, and to initiate the discussion. Just as attainment and realization exist in worldly terms but not in ultimate reality, are the five destinies also distinct in worldly terms but not indistinguishable in ultimate reality? This is the question. It was said, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, it is so, it is so. Just as attainment and realization exist in worldly terms, so too are the five destinies distinct in worldly terms, but not in ultimate reality." This shows that in ultimate reality, all of them are of one taste in the nature of non-arising, so there is no distinction. However, in conventional truth, for the sake of guiding and leading sentient beings, names and signs are grasped, and it is merely a designation of terms. Why is that? Venerable Sharadvatiputra, in ultimate reality, there is no action, no ripening of action, no birth, no cessation, no defilement, and no purification. This shows the reason why the five destinies are not different in ultimate reality. The so-called five destinies are the ripening of well-practiced and poorly practiced actions.
