Chapter Fourteen, The Chapter on Benefit. Chapter Fourteen, The Chapter on Benefit. Then, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Venerable Subhuti: "Venerable Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita, how does he truly understand these dharmas? Venerable Subhuti, what is a Bodhisattva, what is Prajnaparamita? What is true understanding?" This is what Subhuti said to the Bhagavan earlier: "Bhagavan, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita, how does he truly understand this dharma? At that time, calling this form, not focusing on form, not taking, not dwelling, not clinging, not binding," etc., in order to distinguish the occasion for elaborating on the fruit of non-discrimination, Shariputra asked Subhuti three questions: What is a Bodhisattva, what is Prajnaparamita, and what is true understanding? After saying this, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Venerable Sharadvatiputra, etc. This is Subhuti's answer, elaborating on what a Bodhisattva is, etc. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, what you said about what a Bodhisattva is, is because sentient beings are Bodhi, so they are called Bodhisattvas. This is because all sentient beings are the nature of the Dharmakaya's Bodhi, so they are called Bodhisattvas. Bodhi also knows the characteristics of all dharmas, and has no attachment to these dharmas. This means that the mind with the nature of Bodhi also knows the nature of all worldly and transcendental dharmas in the mundane, and in the ultimate, it understands that all dharmas are emptiness, so there is no attachment to these dharmas, and it is a Bodhisattva. What dharma's characteristics are known? The characteristics of form are known, and there is no attachment to this.

Et cetera refers to form, et cetera, up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, understanding the aspects of all worldly and transworldly phenomena, and demonstrating non-attachment to them. It is said: 'Venerable Subhuti, what is the aspect of all phenomena?' It was stated above that one knows the aspect of all phenomena, and then it was said that there is no attachment to it. This is to distinguish the occasion when explaining what the aspect of all phenomena is, which is why Shariputra asked Subhuti. Subhuti said: 'Venerable Sharadvatiputra, by what aspect, what manner, and what characteristic are phenomena made to appear as having aspects?' Et cetera means, by what aspect, manner, and characteristic do conditioned and unconditioned phenomena appear as: 'This is form, this is sound, this is smell, this is taste, this is touch, this is dharma?' Thus, for all internal and external phenomena, in conventional truth, one knows the individual characteristics of phenomena without error, and from this, it is shown that one knows the aspect of phenomena. 'Venerable Sharadvatiputra, whoever says, "What is the Prajnaparamita?"' Et cetera means that above, Shariputra asked Subhuti what the Prajnaparamita is, and this is explaining that question. 'Venerable Sharadvatiputra, that which is called Prajnaparamita is that which has gone far away,' et cetera means that for all worldly and transworldly phenomena, having fully understood all the characteristics of conventional and ultimate truth, that is called having gone far away. Why is it said to have gone far away? 'Venerable Sharadvatiputra, because it has gone far away from the aggregates, therefore it is called having gone far away,' et cetera means that from the aggregates, elements, sense sources, afflictions, and all aspects of views, the six realms of existence, the six perfections, the eighteen emptinesses, and so forth, up to the omniscience itself, having fully understood all worldly and transworldly phenomena in conventional and ultimate truth, and not being attached to those phenomena,

It is shown that it is called Prajñāpāramitā because it is far removed from those. Then, the venerable Śāradvatīputra said, "Thus, the Prajñāpāramitā is also far gone," which means that it is called Prajñāpāramitā because it has reached the end of knowing all dharmas and is far gone without being attached to those dharmas. This is a summary and explanation of the meaning mentioned above. The venerable Śāradvatīputra said, "Whatever is said to be completely examined," etc., is a detailed explanation of the answer to Śāriputra's question to Subhūti, "What is complete examination?" From the worldly dharmas such as the five skandhas to the all-knowingness such as the six pāramitās, the worldly and transcendental dharmas are truly understood to be without substance in the ultimate sense, so they are not grasped as being permanent or impermanent, happy or miserable, self or selfless, lovely or unlovely, empty or not empty, having signs or not having signs, having aspirations or not having aspirations, peaceful or not peaceful, secluded or not secluded. It is shown that the very nature of non-conceptualization is completely understood. He said: Venerable Subhūti, why do you say that, from "Whatever is unborn of form is not form" to "Whatever is unborn of all-knowingness is not all-knowingness"? In order to distinguish the occasion for explaining in detail the meaning of Subhūti's statement above, "The unborn of form is not form," etc., Śāriputra asked Subhūti, "Why do you say that whatever is unborn of those dharmas such as form is not form, etc.?" This is asking for the reason. Subhūti said: Venerable Śāradvatīputra, form is empty of form; whatever is empty is not form, it is unborn, etc. This is Subhūti's detailed explanation of Śāriputra's question: Form in the ultimate sense
