, abiding in the realm of the Buddha. The Buddha's Dharma is the Dharma of the Tathagata's qualities, such as the four wisdoms. Those Dharmas are not established as truly existent in the ultimate sense, and because they are extremely pure, the unborn nature of those Dharmas will be seen, which is what is to be shown. It means that the unborn will be comprehended and realized. Then, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Venerable Subhuti: As I understand the meaning of what the Venerable Subhuti has said, from "form is also unborn, feeling is also unborn" to "Buddha is also unborn, Buddha's Dharma is also unborn," is the meaning that all Dharmas, as stated above by Subhuti, are of one taste in the nature of the unborn, without difference, which Shariputra repeated. I have measured the meaning of what you said in that way. If all Dharmas are of one taste and without difference in the nature of the unborn, then realizing one Dharma will lead to the realization of all, and therefore the Shravakas and others will attain the fruits such as Stream-enterer. This should be connected with what follows. Those of the Shravaka vehicle will also attain the fruit of Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, and Arhatship. Those of the Pratyekabuddha vehicle will also attain the Pratyekabuddha enlightenment. Bodhisattva Mahasattvas will also attain omniscience. This means that, in the order mentioned above, all Dharmas are of one taste in emptiness, without difference. If that is the case, then forms and other Dharmas, Stream-enterer and others, Once-returner, Non-returner, Arhat fruits, Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, and omniscience are of one taste in the nature of emptiness, without difference. Just by seeing and realizing forms and other Dharmas, the fruits of Stream-enterer and others will also be realized and attained. If the reason is like that, why would it not be so? This is Shariputra asking Subhuti.

Furthermore, if the five types of beings are not different, then all phenomena are of the nature of emptiness, of one taste. If there is no difference, then gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and the beings of hell will also be indistinguishable. It is also said that Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas will attain the five kinds of enlightenment because the four fruits of stream-enterer and so on, self-enlightenment, and these five enlightenments are no different in nature from unsurpassed enlightenment. Therefore, Bodhisattvas will attain these five enlightenments without cultivating or accomplishing them. Venerable Subhuti, if all phenomena are unborn, why do stream-enterers cultivate the path to abandon the three fetters? This is because all phenomena are of the nature of emptiness and are the same. If there is no difference, then what need is there for a stream-enterer to cultivate the noble path in order to abandon the three fetters? The three fetters are: belief in a self, adherence to rules and vows, and doubt. Belief in a self is the view of self. If one is attached to the view of self, one will not desire the liberation of the Dharma of no-self in a person. If one adheres to rules and vows, one will think that it is enough to rely on rules and vows alone and will not cultivate the noble path. Doubt will cause one to doubt the noble path. These three phenomena are the opposite of the noble path and are the cause of birth in samsara, so they are called fetters. It is also said that the once-returner cultivates the path to weaken desire, hatred, and delusion. This is because if all phenomena are without self-nature and without difference, then what need is there for a once-returner to cultivate the noble path in order to weaken desire, hatred, and delusion? Merely seeing phenomena such as form is enough to have cultivated the noble path. That is the meaning. It is also said that the non-returner, in order to abandon all the

The statement that one cultivates the path in order to abandon the five bonds is because if all dharmas are unborn and of the nature of emptiness, without difference, then in order to abandon the five bonds of the non-noble part, there is no need to cultivate the noble path. The term "non-noble" refers to the desire realm, because it is worse and lower than the two higher realms of the form and formless realms. The term "five bonds of the non-noble part" refers to the five afflictions belonging to the desire realm. The five bonds are: the view of the aggregates, the adherence to ethics and asceticism, desire for desire, malice, and the five. The meaning of the bonds is as previously explained. The Arhat cultivates the path in order to abandon the bonds of the higher part, because if all dharmas are unborn and of the nature of emptiness, without difference, then what need is there for the noble Arhat to cultivate the noble path in order to abandon the afflictions of the form and formless realms? The term "bonds of the higher part" refers to the five afflictions of the form and formless realms, namely, the desire for the form realm, the desire for the formless realm, agitation, pride, and ignorance. The meaning of the bonds is as previously explained. The statement that one who has entered the vehicle of the solitary Buddha cultivates the path for the sake of self-enlightenment, and so on, means that the solitary Buddha cultivates the path in order to attain the fruit of self-enlightenment, the Bodhisattva practices austerities for the benefit of sentient beings, and the Thus-Gone One manifests complete enlightenment of unsurpassed enlightenment and becomes a Buddha. What need is there to turn the wheel of Dharma? Having said this, the venerable Subhuti said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra, from "having said this" to "one does not accept that the unborn has a solitary Buddha, one does not accept that there is self-enlightenment," the establishment and differentiation of the stream-enterer of the Hearers, etc., is merely a conventional designation.
