Because the nature of form is emptiness, and because it is not real, it is not form and has no birth. Therefore, whatever is the unborn of form is not form, as it is taught. Just as it is said about form, so it should be applied to all phenomena, both mundane and supramundane, up to the state of omniscience. Asked: Venerable Subhuti, why do you say that, from "whatever is the decay of form, that is not form" to "whatever is the decay of omniscience, that is not omniscience," it is to distinguish the occasion for explaining in detail the meaning of what Subhuti said above, "whatever is the decay of form, etc., that is not form, etc." Shariputra asked Subhuti: Why do you say that, whatever is the decay of form, etc., is not form, etc.? This is asking for his reason. Subhuti said: Venerable son of Sharadvati, thus, whatever is decay, and whatever is form, and whatever is non-duality, etc., this is Subhuti explaining in detail the meaning of what Shariputra asked, that is, decay and form, and non-duality, are merely nominal terms in conventional truth, but in ultimate truth, those phenomena are neither possessed nor not possessed. There is no form, it cannot be indicated, there is no obstruction, thus, without characteristics, it is one characteristic, because it is not without things, therefore the decay of form,

Through the realization of perfect purity, one will see that all phenomena are unborn; this is to explain the benefit of realizing non-duality. For the sake of extreme purity, one will see the unborn nature of ordinary beings, etc., which is also to explain the benefit of realizing non-duality. Among them, "ordinary beings" refers to those who have not attained the Dharma of the noble ones. The Dharma of ordinary beings refers to the eight worldly concerns, etc. "Stream-enterer" refers to a person who abides in the fruit of stream-entry. The Dharma of a stream-enterer refers to having abandoned, through the path of seeing, the view of the aggregates, the adherence to ethics and asceticism as supreme, and doubt, and directly seeing all white dharmas. "Once-returner" refers to a person who abides in the fruit of once-returning, taking one more birth among gods and humans. The Dharma of a once-returner refers to having made the afflictions such as desire thin through the path of meditation. "Non-returner" refers to a person who abides in the fruit of non-returning. The Dharma of a non-returner refers to the nature of having abandoned all afflictions such as desire through the path of meditation. "Arhat" refers to a person who abides in the fruit of arhatship. The Dharma of an arhat refers to having completely abandoned all the afflictions of the three realms, thus having done what needed to be done, laid down the burden, and having the nature of the Dharma that there is no other existence beyond this, etc. A solitary buddha is of two types: one who practices with a retinue and one who dwells alone like a rhinoceros. The Dharma of a solitary buddha refers to the nature of realizing dependent origination through one's own intelligence without needing to receive teachings from others, not teaching the Dharma with words, but benefiting sentient beings by demonstrating miracles. A bodhisattva refers to an individual who abides from the first bhumi to the tenth bhumi. The Dharma of a bodhisattva refers to the nature of realizing the selflessness of both person and phenomena, and primarily benefiting sentient beings until the end of samsara. A buddha refers to the nature of having awakened from the sleep of ignorance, having vast wisdom, and comprehending all phenomena.
