"Bya'o zhes bya ba" refers to the bodhisattva abiding in the seventh bhumi, who abides in the absence of signs. If the notion of signs arises, it becomes a defilement for the bodhisattva. "rGyur lta ba dang zhes bya ba" means being separated from the sign of viewing the cause as producing the effect. One should not be attached to name, form, aggregates, elements, sense bases, and the three realms, because in ultimate reality, they are not established as truly existent. Attachment, clinging, reliance, and dwelling on the three realms are merely different names for attachment. "Attachment to the view of relying on the Buddha" means relying on the form body of the Buddha, which is endowed with marks and signs, and viewing it as truly existent. In this way, one will not be able to see the Buddha, because it is said in the scriptures, "The Buddha should be viewed as the nature of reality." "One should not be attached to the view of relying on the Dharma" means that if one views the Dharma of scripture, the twelve branches of scripture, and the Dharma to be attained, such as the ten powers and the four fearlessnesses, as truly existent, one will not be able to see the nature of the Dharma. Therefore, one should not be attached to the view of relying on the Dharma. "Attachment to the view of relying on the Sangha" means that if one is attached to viewing the noble Sangha and the ordinary Sangha as truly existent, one is attached to grasping at signs, and one will not be able to see the Sangha as it truly is. Rather, one should view it as illusory in conventional reality, and in ultimate reality, one should not grasp at it as truly existent or as a sign. This is what is to be taught. "Attachment to the view of relying on ethics" means that if one views the vows of bodhisattvas and the vows of shravakas as truly existent and grasps at signs, one will not be able to make ethics completely pure. Rather, one should view it as illusory in conventional reality, and in ultimate reality, one should not view it as truly existent or grasp at signs. In this way, one can make ethics completely pure. Therefore, one should not be attached to the view of relying on ethics. "Becoming discouraged by saying that all phenomena are empty" means that in ultimate reality, all phenomena are without true existence and are empty, but one should not think that the results of good and bad actions, happiness and suffering, do not exist, and become afraid and discouraged by emptiness.

Because in conventional truth, it is not merely the absence of illusion-like appearances. 'Contradictory to emptiness' means that if there were a dharma called emptiness existing separately, then saying that all dharmas are emptiness would contradict it because it would not be the nature of emptiness. Since emptiness is also included within the emptiness of all dharmas, there is no contradiction in saying that all dharmas are emptiness. Therefore, it does not contradict emptiness. 'Subhuti, these twenty dharmas are not to be done' means that a Bodhisattva abiding on the seventh bhumi, if they do not perform these twenty dharmas, they have truly entered the Great Vehicle. 'He should perfect these twenty dharmas' and so on, means that a Bodhisattva abiding on the seventh bhumi should perfect these twenty dharmas. 'Perfecting emptiness' means not regarding emptiness as having its own characteristics. 'Manifesting through the absence of signs' means that since all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, one does not attend to any signs. 'Absence of aspiration' means not being attached to or desiring any of the dharmas of the three realms. 'Perfect purity of the three spheres' means that at this time, one does not generate faults or defects through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and one perfects the ten virtues. 'Having compassion and affection for all sentient beings' means possessing the great compassion of a Bodhisattva. 'Not despising those sentient beings' means possessing the great love of a Bodhisattva and not despising or slandering any sentient beings. 'Viewing all dharmas as equality' means not distinguishing between samsara and nirvana and viewing them without acceptance or rejection. 'Thoroughly understanding the true nature and not becoming arrogant because of it' means thoroughly understanding that all dharmas are without inherent existence in ultimate truth, and knowing that both the object of understanding and the act of understanding are without any object of focus, and are without understanding. 'Tolerance of non-arising' means that all dharmas are unborn...
