Because one does not despair by protecting beings in their situation, and because of the vast intention not to abandon all sentient beings, and in order to become the best of the great assembly of sentient beings, one is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Thus, the meaning of the term "Great Being" is explained. Having thus shown the vast intention, in order to show the vast practice, the Blessed One further said, "Subhuti, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should constantly and without interruption desire the Dharma," and so on. This vast practice is also shown in four ways: abiding in the love of the Dharma, abiding in emptiness, abiding in mindfulness, and abiding in white dharmas, and abiding in samadhi. Among these, abiding in the love of the Dharma is shown from "one should constantly and without interruption desire the Dharma" to "this is diligence in the yoga of devotion to the Dharma," which shows the practice of abiding in the love of the Dharma. Among these, desiring the Dharma and loving the Dharma is abiding in the love of the Dharma when listening. Devotion to the Dharma is abiding in the love of the Dharma when thinking. Diligence in the yoga of devotion to the Dharma is abiding in the love of the Dharma when meditating. Subhuti, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abides in the emptiness of the interior, from "abiding" to "abiding in the emptiness of the nature of non-things, one should make the great aggregate of sentient beings become the ultimate of certainty," which shows the practice of abiding in emptiness. Subhuti, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abides in the mindfulnesses, from "abiding" to "abiding in the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddhas, one should make the aggregate of sentient beings become supreme in an invisible way," which shows abiding in mindfulness and other white dharmas. Subhuti, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abides in the samadhi of courageous going, from "abiding" to "abiding in the samadhi that is liberated and unattached like the sky, one should make the great aggregate of sentient beings become the ultimate of certainty.

The content between "transforming in a non-objective way" is the teaching of practice dwelling in samadhi. The characteristics of these samadhis will be explained in detail in the chapter on the Great Vehicle of Samadhi below. "Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva dwells in these dharmas and practices prajnaparamita, thereby bringing definitive benefit to the great aggregates of sentient beings. Therefore, he is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva." This passage is the Blessed One's summary and explanation of the meaning of the term Bodhisattva Mahasattva. In order to explain the meaning of the term Bodhisattva Mahasattva as explained by the venerable Shariputra, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, for what reason is this called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and I also generate joy," and so on. The meaning of the term Bodhisattva Mahasattva as explained by the venerable Shariputra is: because of realizing the great meaning of the selflessness of both person and dharma, thereby abandoning the view of self, etc., and abandoning the attachment of viewing the aggregates, etc., as dharma, therefore, in order to proclaim the great meaning of the selflessness of person and dharma to many sentient beings, he is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Among them, the Bodhisattva himself realizes the selflessness of person, and in order to make sentient beings abandon the view of clinging to person as self, proclaiming the great meaning of the selflessness of person is: "Blessed One, in order to abandon the view of self, proclaiming the Dharma to sentient beings" to "abandoning the view of non-existence" is the content explained. The non-Buddhists see it upside down and mistakenly, from the differences in the actions of body and mind, clinging to self, sentient beings, life, person, etc., as various forms of self. For these, it is called the view of self of person. The Bodhisattva realizes the selflessness of person, and in order to proclaim the great meaning of the Dharma of the selflessness of person to sentient beings, he is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva.
