Chapter Eight: The Chapter on Bodhisattvas, Great Beings. Chapter Eight: The Chapter on Bodhisattvas, Great Beings. After that, the determination of this explanation is to be shown. This explanation, first of all, is that for this son of Sharadvati, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, who desires to fully awaken to all dharmas in all aspects, should strive in the Perfection of Wisdom, and so on, the words and meanings spoken are to be thoroughly determined and explained. The determination is also of two types: determining the meaning of the words and determining the characteristics. Among these, determining the meaning of the words is: Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, what is the meaning of the term 'Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva'?" To this, Subhuti, the meaning of the word Bodhisattva is the absence of meaning, which means that when Subhuti asked what the meaning of the word Bodhisattva is, the Buddha replied that the Bodhisattva itself is not established as truly existent in the ultimate sense, therefore, the meaning of its word is also not truly existent, this is a brief explanation. Why is this so? Because neither Bodhi is born, nor sentient beings are born, which means that the reason for the absence of meaning of the word Bodhisattva is explained, that is, neither the Bodhi to be attained in the ultimate sense is born, nor the sentient beings who attain it are born, therefore, the term Bodhisattva does not exist. Subhuti, there is no word for Bodhi in Bodhisattva, nor is there a word for sentient beings, therefore, the meaning of the word Bodhisattva is the absence of meaning, which means that the reason for the absence of meaning of the word is explained. In the language of India, the word "pada" refers to word, base, and place. Since both Bodhi and Sattva are not established as truly existent in the ultimate sense, therefore, the word that shows them, or their place or basis, does not exist, so the meaning of the word Bodhisattva does not exist. Subhuti, for example, there are no bird tracks in the sky, and so on, that is, like this, the Bodhi

Eleven metaphors are shown for the meaninglessness of the words of a Bodhisattva. The absence of bird tracks in the sky is the first metaphor. Just as there is no basis for the appearance of bird tracks in the sky, so too, the term 'Bodhisattva' is not a truly existing entity, and therefore there is no basis or place for the meaning to be expressed by words. This is what is shown. Subhuti, for example, like saying there is no place in a dream, and so on, the eight things—dreams, illusions, mirages, reflections of the moon in water, echoes, optical illusions, images, and emanations—show the second metaphor for the meaninglessness of the words of a Bodhisattva. Just as dreams and so on are not truly existent, so too, the meaning of the words of a Bodhisattva is non-existent. This is what is shown. Subhuti, for example, like saying there is no place in the ultimate reality, and so on, the eight things—ultimate reality, suchness, non-erroneous suchness, non-other suchness, the nature of phenomena, the sphere of phenomena, the abiding nature of phenomena, and the faultless nature of phenomena—show the third metaphor for the meaninglessness of the words of a Bodhisattva. Just as the ultimate reality and so on, these unconditioned things, are not truly existing entities, so too, the meaning of the words of a Bodhisattva is not truly existent. This is what is shown. Subhuti, for example, like saying there is no place in the form of a magical person, and so on, Subhuti, for example, the words of a magical person practicing the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are meaningless. Subhuti, likewise, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, the words of a Bodhisattva are meaningless, up to this point. There is no place in the aggregates, sense bases, elements, six contacts, six feelings arising from contact, ignorance, and so on, the twelve links of dependent origination within a magical person, and that same magical person practices the six perfections, practices the eighteen emptinesses, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment

Subhuti, for example, the form of the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One has no abiding place, and so on. Subhuti, for example, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One's eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha have no abiding place. Why is that? Because those unshared qualities of a Buddha do not exist. Subhuti, similarly, the meaninglessness of words of a Bodhisattva, a great being who practices in the Perfection of Wisdom, up to, the form of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, and so on, the five aggregates, the twelve sources, the eighteen elements, the six contacts, the six feelings arising from contact, the twelve links of dependent origination, the six perfections, the eighteen emptinesses, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the four noble truths, the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings in meditative absorption, the three doors of liberation, the six superknowledges, the various samadhis, the various dharani doors, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges.
