I, the great lord, go first, in order to completely abandon afflictions, refers to the meditative stabilization of dhyana, the four immeasurables, and the formless absorptions. The reason for showing these to others is that the Bodhisattva, possessing the mind of wanting to attain all-knowingness and being under the influence of great compassion, in order to abandon the afflictions of all sentient beings, shows these dhyana, samadhi, and formless absorptions to others, which is the meaning. Among these, telling these to others refers to merely telling others the names of dhyana and so on. Explaining means explaining the definitive words. Showing means showing both the meaning and the words. Explaining refers to explaining in detail the abbreviated content of the words and meanings of dhyana and so on. Differentiating means showing by separately dividing the branches of dhyana and so on. Clarifying means that the teacher instructs without concealment. The taste of these refers to showing the method for abandoning attachment to the taste of dhyana and so on. The faults of these refer to showing the faults of being born in the form and formless realms due to the power of these if one is attached to the taste of dhyana and so on. Showing the arising as it is means showing that these dhyana and so on do not focus on the ultimate truth, and in order to be liberated from grasping at characteristics such as attachment to the taste of these, it is called showing the arising as it is. Among the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, and the four formless absorptions, here the order is reversed, and the four immeasurables are explained first in order to establish the perfection of generosity through the power of loving-kindness and compassion. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with the attention corresponding to all-knowingness, engages in meditative stabilization and arises from it on dhyana, the four immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, even the status of a Hearer or Solitary Buddha cannot understand the other's generation of mind, that is the Bodhicitta.

The so-called "Earth Courage Great Bodhisattva's discipline perfection does not diminish" refers to the fact that while practicing meditation, the four immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, one also perfectly cultivates the perfection of discipline. This explains that when practicing meditation and so on, one makes a vow to attain omniscience itself, and one does not diminish the mind that is attained by the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Because the Bodhisattva's vow does not diminish, it is the perfection of discipline. This is what is to be explained. Thus, from "Bodhisattva Mahasattva with the thought of having all-knowingness" to "This is the patience perfection of Bodhisattva Mahasattva," it refers to the fact that while practicing meditation, the four immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, one also perfectly cultivates the perfection of patience. To endure and be fond of those thoughts, to realize and think and understand, means to have the thought of attaining omniscience itself, and to think and contemplate that the Dharma is taught to exhaust the afflictions of all sentient beings. These are synonyms for enduring and accepting. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with the thought of having all-knowingness, practices with meditation, the four immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, he does not diminish diligence for the sake of all sentient beings and for the sake of omniscience itself. This is called the diligence perfection of Bodhisattva Mahasattva, which means that while practicing meditation, the four immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, one also perfectly cultivates the perfection of diligence. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with the thought of having all-knowingness, enters and arises from meditation, liberation, samadhi, and absorption, he does not fall into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground.

This is the Perfection of Meditative Concentration of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, which teaches that while meditating on meditative concentration, immeasurables, and formless attainments, one also accomplishes the complete perfection of the Perfection of Meditative Concentration. Thus, when meditating on meditative concentration and so forth, one should focus on the all-knowingness itself. It is taught that not allowing the mind to wander to other things by focusing on the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is the Perfection of Meditative Concentration. Here again, there are four meditative concentrations, four immeasurables, and four formless attainments. Since the stage of accomplishing the six perfections completely while meditating on these two types of Dharma is the stage, the arising of liberation and samadhi means that one should understand that meditating on the samadhi of the four immeasurables is for the sake of achieving liberation, and thus one is meditating on the four immeasurables. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with the focus endowed with all-knowingness, [meditates on] the limbs of the first meditative concentration, and so forth, up to "This is the Perfection of Wisdom of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Sharadvatiputra, endowed with life, this is the Great Vehicle in which a Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom," it teaches that while meditating on those twelve Dharmas such as meditative concentration, one also accomplishes the complete perfection of the Perfection of Wisdom. It teaches that the Perfection of Wisdom is precisely that, with respect to those twelve Dharmas such as the four meditative concentrations, one conceptually discerns impermanence, suffering, and so forth in the conventional truth through wisdom, does not perceive them in the ultimate truth, and does not become arrogant with them. The limbs of the first meditative concentration are five: application of thought, sustained application of thought, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The limbs of the second meditative concentration are four: inner clarity, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The limbs of the third meditative concentration are five: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The limbs of the fourth meditative concentration are neither suffering nor
