It is called immeasurable because it becomes the cause of obtaining immeasurable dharmas. There are three types of loving-kindness: loving-kindness focused on sentient beings, loving-kindness focused on dharmas, and loving-kindness without focus. Among them, loving-kindness focused on sentient beings is: while in the stage of belief and practice, focusing on sentient beings and cultivating loving-kindness. Loving-kindness focused on dharmas is: from the first bhumi to the seventh bhumi, focusing on suchness and cultivating loving-kindness with the three circles completely purified. Loving-kindness without focus is: from the eighth bhumi onwards, there are no characteristics and no effort, because non-conceptualization is spontaneously accomplished, and even without focusing on suchness, cultivating loving-kindness with the three circles completely purified. The phrase "the mind endowed with loving-kindness is vast" and so on, shows the qualities of loving-kindness. Among them, "vast" is because the samadhi is vast. "Extremely expansive" is because loving-kindness is increasingly expanded and cultivated towards all sentient beings in the ten directions of the world. "Non-dual" is because the nature of loving-kindness is the nature of non-conceptualization, and it is of one taste. "Immeasurable" is because it focuses on immeasurable sentient beings. "Undefiled" is because there is no thought of harming the inner mind. "Without greed" is because there is no attachment to external wealth and so on, and no harm from greed and craving. "Completely and extremely cultivated" is because one is accustomed to focusing on sentient beings and so on in the conventional sense, and cultivating the complete purification of the three circles in the ultimate sense. "Pervading the realm of the world and dharma, reaching the limits of space, filling the ten directions extensively, believing and practicing accordingly" refers to cultivating loving-kindness focused on sentient beings. When the mind is not accustomed at first, one cultivates loving-kindness even more than before towards the person one loves, then cultivates even more intense loving-kindness towards those who are not as good as him, then cultivates moderate loving-kindness towards those who are slightly loved, and then cultivates slight loving-kindness towards those who are not loved at all. Similarly, towards the people of the whole family and the people of one city...

It is taught that one should cultivate and increase the loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, immeasurable and limitless, in the ten directions of the world from the realm of the three-thousand great-thousand world systems, including people, people of one place, people of one realm, people of one kingdom, people of one continent, and the four continents. The so-called great mind with compassion, the extremely vast mind, etc., refers to the cultivation of immeasurable compassion. Compassion is also divided into three types: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on Dharma, and without focus. They are divided into three types according to the order of the grounds, as well as the qualities of being vast, extremely vast, etc., and the habituation of focusing on sentient beings, expanding more and more, as mentioned above. The so-called great mind with joy, etc., refers to the cultivation of immeasurable joy. Joy is also divided into three types: joy arising from focusing on the happiness and prosperity of sentient beings, joy arising from the complete accumulation of one's own merit and wisdom, and the joy of realizing the holy Dharma and incorporating it into practice. The so-called great mind with equanimity in a non-focusing manner, etc., refers to the cultivation of immeasurable equanimity. Equanimity is also divided into three types: when doing things for sentient beings, temporarily abandoning those sentient beings who are not suitable; equanimity that is not tainted by the eight worldly dharmas, such as gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and infamy, happiness and suffering; and non-discriminating equanimity. The qualities of being vast, etc., and the cultivation of spreading throughout the ten directions, joy and equanimity, are all as mentioned above. The phrase "completely transcending all perceptions of form," etc., up to "this is the perfection of generosity of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva," indicates that while perfecting the perfection of generosity, it also teaches the method of cultivating the four formless absorptions. The phrase "completely transcending all perceptions of form," etc.
