In order to abandon coarse and subtle discrimination, it is called the pacification of coarse and subtle discrimination. "Being completely subdued inwardly, becoming one stream of mind" means that having abandoned coarse and subtle discrimination in this way, the mind does not wander to any object, and becomes single-pointed concentration, referring to the state of clarity of mind. Not having coarse and subtle discrimination is as previously explained. "Born from samadhi" means that it is the state of not having coarse and subtle discrimination and the mind becoming single-pointed. "Having joy and happiness" is as before. He is free from attachment to joy, possessing mindfulness and awareness, abiding in equanimity. Experiencing happiness with the body, the noble ones praise him as possessing mindfulness, practicing equanimity towards happiness, which means dwelling in the third dhyana, which is without joy, having approached and cultivated it. This shows the nature and qualities of the third dhyana. "He is free from attachment to joy" means that in the first and second dhyanas, the body is strong, the mind is extremely subdued, and the mind becomes distracted by the capable joy, but in this third dhyana, even the subtle mental distraction of attachment to such joy is abandoned. "Possessing mindfulness and awareness, abiding in equanimity" means that with mindfulness and awareness, there is no opportunity for the mental distraction of attachment to joy to arise. There is no fear of the arising of the distraction of joy, and the state of the mind naturally being accomplished is called abiding in equanimity. "Experiencing happiness with the body" means that the body and mind are capable and extremely subdued, and the body becomes relaxed and comfortable, experiencing happiness. "The noble ones praise him as possessing mindfulness, practicing equanimity towards happiness" means that the Buddha's Shravaka disciples praise that meditator as possessing mindfulness, practicing equanimity towards happiness and abiding in it, which is praising the qualities. "Dwelling in the third dhyana, which is without joy, having approached and cultivated it" means the dhyana that is in accordance with the characteristic of abandoning attachment to joy as previously explained is completely

English

This refers to the meaning of having completely accomplished and abided. That is, having abandoned happiness and also abandoned suffering, joy and displeasure have also disappeared long ago. There is neither happiness nor suffering, and approaching and cultivating the fourth dhyana with equanimity and mindfulness, this is called the nature and qualities of the fourth dhyana. Among them, "also abandoned happiness" refers to not being attached to the happiness experienced by the body in the third dhyana. "Also abandoned suffering" refers to the fact that in the second dhyana, the mind is completely clear and the mind stream becomes one, because suffering has already been abandoned, so there is no suffering in the fourth dhyana. "Joy and displeasure have also disappeared long ago" refers to the statement in the third dhyana that there is no attachment to joy, so "joy" refers to the feeling of joy, because joy has already been abandoned in the third dhyana, so there is no joy in the fourth dhyana. In the second dhyana, the mind is completely clear and the mind stream becomes one, and displeasure has disappeared, so there is no need to abandon displeasure in the fourth dhyana, therefore it is said that "joy and displeasure have also disappeared long ago." "There is neither happiness nor suffering, with equanimity and mindfulness completely pure" refers to having abandoned happiness and suffering long ago, not worrying about being contaminated by the faults of dhyana, without caution and fear, because the mind is naturally accomplished, so it possesses completely pure equanimity and completely pure mindfulness, this refers to this meaning. From "He, with a mind of loving-kindness, vast and extremely broad" to "Filled with the realm of phenomena, reaching the limits of space, filling the ten directions, cherishing joy and acting accordingly," it is to show the true entry into the Mahayana in order to fully cultivate the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness while fully accomplishing the perfection of generosity. Among them, "immeasurable" refers to being directed towards immeasurable sentient beings, becoming the cause of immeasurable accumulations of merit and wisdom, and the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, and other qualities of the Buddha.
