From the beginning of thoroughly distinguishing with the mind engaged in the contemplation of impermanence of form in a non-attending manner, like that, not abandoning the mind engaged in the contemplation of all-knowingness for those, and not abandoning diligence, this is the perfection of diligence of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Because of its presence, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not become fearless, unafraid, or terrified, up to this point, it is the teaching of skillful means for perfecting the perfection of diligence. Not abandoning the individual examination of phenomena such as the five aggregates in a non-attending manner, and not abandoning the mind engaged in the contemplation of all-knowingness itself, is the skillful means for perfecting the perfection of diligence, this is what is taught. Furthermore, Subhuti, when the Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom, when, with the mind engaged in the contemplation of all-knowingness, he examines the impermanence of form in a non-attending manner, and the mind engaged in the contemplation of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and not being non-virtuous dharmas, not opening up opportunities for others that become obstacles to enlightenment, and so on, up to this point, this is the perfection of meditative concentration of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Because of its presence, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not become fearless, unafraid, or terrified, up to this point, it is the teaching of skillful means for perfecting the perfection of meditative concentration. Meditative concentration is defined as not distracting the mind to other objects of focus, but rather focusing the mind single-pointedly on whatever object of focus is being meditated upon. This, too, is cultivated for the sake of attaining all-knowingness in the conventional sense, and not being distracted by other non-virtuous dharmas that obstruct and hinder the attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and opening up those opportunities themselves, is the skillful means for perfecting the perfection of meditative concentration, this is what is taught.

When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with an attention that is endowed with all aspects of omniscience, he thoroughly contemplates in this way: The emptiness of form is not that form is not empty, but form itself is emptiness. Emptiness is also form, and so on. Subhuti, this is the skillful means by which a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses this skillful means, upon hearing this teaching, will not be afraid, will not be alarmed, and will not be terrified, and so on. This is to teach the skillful means for perfecting the Perfection of Wisdom. The emptiness of form is not that form is not empty, this means that by the nature of form, the self-nature of emptiness being fully established as the cause, the self-nature of form, which is produced by imputation, does not become empty, but form itself is empty. Therefore, it is taught that form itself is also emptiness. Emptiness is also form, it is said, meaning that form itself is empty by nature, therefore form and emptiness are not different. Just as with form, from feeling up to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, all phenomena of the world and beyond the world should also be applied in the same way. Thus, in the ultimate truth, realizing that all phenomena are of one taste in emptiness, and possessing the attention that obtains the knowledge of all aspects of conventional truth, that is the skillful means for perfecting the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti asked: "Lord, what kind of virtuous friend is it that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, who is completely taken care of by a virtuous friend, does not fear, is not alarmed, and is not terrified upon hearing this teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom?" and so on. Subhuti, it should be known that this is the virtuous friend of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is completely taken care of by that virtuous friend, when he hears this Perfection of Wisdom,

Up to the point of "not being afraid, not being fearful, not being terrified," this demonstrates the skillful means of relying on a virtuous friend. That virtuous friend is one who teaches the aggregates, sense bases, elements, six contacts, six feelings arising from contact, dependent origination, the perfections, emptinesses, mindfulnesses, right abandonments, miraculous feet, faculties, powers, branches of enlightenment, noble paths, noble truths, meditative stabilizations, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, gradual abiding stabilizations, doors of liberation, superknowledges, samadhis, dharani gates, the powers of the Tathagata, fearlessnesses, separate correct knowledges, great compassion, unshared qualities of the Buddha, all-knowingness, and all worldly and transworldly phenomena up to unsurpassed enlightenment, teaching impermanence, suffering, selflessness, peace, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-fabrication, and solitary nature in a conventional way, and teaching that all of these are unobtainable in an ultimate way. Having taught the Dharma in this way, the root of virtue arising from teaching and listening to the Dharma is not dedicated to attaining the levels of hearers and solitary realizers, but is dedicated to attaining all-knowingness. By attending to such a virtuous friend, listening to the Dharma, and hearing this profound meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, one will not be afraid, fearful, or terrified. This is what is to be explained. When explaining worldly phenomena such as the aggregates and elements, as well as the six perfections and the eighteen emptinesses, it does not say that the Dharma is taught for the sake of meditation. But from the mindfulnesses onwards, the Dharma is taught for the sake of meditation.
