This is what is shown. Why is that? From "This is not called a sign" to "This is because it does not apprehend all phenomena that are empty of their own nature," it shows the establishment of not apprehending signs. The so-called "This is because affliction arises from signs" means that seeing phenomena such as form as real and clinging to signs is the obstacle of the Bodhisattva, because it causes the mind stream to be afflicted, hence it is called affliction. What are those signs? Form is a sign, feeling is a sign, and so on, letters are signs, saying one is a sign, saying two is a sign, saying different is a sign, this is called affliction, thus showing the worldly and transcendental dharmas, those mentioned by name, if they are distinguished as real and clung to as signs, are the afflictions of the Bodhisattva. Among them, "letters are signs" means clinging to the letters A, etc., as doors showing the meaning of non-arising. "Saying one," "saying two," "saying different," etc., are also as previously stated, clinging to them as real is a sign. If that is clinging to signs, then even the wandering mendicant would not have gained faith in this omniscient wisdom. This shows the reason and example of signlessness. The non-Buddhist wandering mendicant, called the garlanded one, is one who delights in the samadhi of signlessness. After hearing the signless dharma from the Blessed One, he gained faith in the omniscient wisdom. This example shows the reason for not clinging to signs. If the Prajnaparamita, etc., were clinging to signs, then the Blessed One should not have taught the signless dharma. But that wandering mendicant, after hearing the signless dharma, generated faith, which is unreasonable. Compared with the fact that faith arises from teaching the signless dharma, signlessness is true, and clinging to signs is inverted, hence it is afflic

This shows that it will be completely attained. So, what is that faith? For example, like "believing in the Prajnaparamita," etc., this shows the object of the wandering one's faith in which dharma, as well as the nature and categories of faith. "That is not the realm of characteristics" means that that faith is not generated in the ultimate truth in a way that has characteristics. "Nor is it in a way that lacks characteristics" means that in the conventional truth, it is not merely established by name and concept as lacking characteristics. In this way, since there is no complete grasping of characteristics and lack of characteristics, it is not grasping, which shows the meaning of not clinging to characteristics, summarizing what was said earlier, that one should understand not clinging to having characteristics, nor clinging to not having characteristics. The garlanded wandering one, also having developed faith in this omniscient wisdom, enters with partial wisdom by following faith, meaning that that wandering one previously practiced without characteristics with faith, so it is called following faith. It is not that all dharmas are realized as lacking characteristics all at once, but because each of form, etc., is realized as lacking characteristics, so it is called entering with partial wisdom. Having entered in this way, not completely grasping form, not completely grasping feeling, from this to not completely grasping consciousness, shows that the wandering one individually examines the dharmas of form, etc., with partial wisdom and then realizes the lack of characteristics. It means that, like this, he does not apprehend all dharmas that are empty of self-nature, which shows the reason for not clinging to characteristics in the dharmas of form, etc., that the wandering one, after individually examining, realizes that the dharmas of form, etc., are empty of self-nature, because he does not see that it can be clung to as a characteristic, so it shows that he does not completely cling to characteristics. Why is that? For example, because he does not truly see inwardly in the way of realizing and obtaining that wisdom, and not completely grasping the faultless nature of dharma, and truly
