Fifth, the chapter on diligently practicing pervasive activities. Fifth, the chapter on diligently practicing pervasive activities. Now, in order to show how many things there are to be strived for, the various distinctions of effort will be explained. The various distinctions of what should be strived for are also the six kinds of definitive arising practices shown in the text below. What are the six? They are: practicing detachment from the two extremes, practicing non-abiding, practicing without complete grasping, practicing complete examination, practicing with skillful means, and practicing swift manifestation of complete enlightenment. Because these practices definitely give rise to omniscience, they are called definitive arising. In the context of showing the various distinctions of what should be strived for in these definitive arising practices, the venerable Subhuti asked the Blessed One: "Thus, I do not perceive or seek bodhisattvas and prajnaparamita," and so on. That is, if both the bodhisattva who strives in ultimate reality and the prajnaparamita that should be strived for are not perceived, then to whom and to what dharma should one give instruction and subsequent guidance? This is a question raised by understanding the words and meaning of the previous teaching on striving. "Blessed One, thus, I do not perceive or seek the increase or decrease of all dharmas," and so on, until "I will regret it." If both dharma and person are not perceived in ultimate reality, but one perceives bodhisattvas or prajnaparamita as real and gives instruction, then it becomes an imputation and arising from non-existence, and it also becomes the removal of non-existence from the object of existence, and it will also become slander. If one thus imputes and slanders, one will abide in the two extremes of existence and non-existence, and because it contradicts the meaning of the prajnaparamita sutra, I will regret it. "Increase" means to impute by arising from non-existence in ultimate reality. "Decrease" means to slander by reducing from non-non-existence in conventional truth. Thus, the two extremes of imputation and slander.

Not abiding is to show the practice of being separated from the two extremes of existence and non-existence in persons and dharmas. The name of the Blessed One also has no abiding, no end, and no blessing, etc. The name of a Bodhisattva or the name of Prajnaparamita also has no object to be spoken of. Therefore, it is shown to abandon the two extremes of abiding and non-abiding. If there is an object, like form and other conditioned dharmas, it abides in place and direction, or like space and other unconditioned dharmas, it does not abide in place and direction. Since the name has no object, if there is no abiding, there is also no non-abiding, as shown. "No end" means also no non-abiding. "No blessing" means that having abandoned the two extremes of abiding and non-abiding, it is blessed by an object that is neither abiding nor non-abiding, and it is also not abiding, as shown. Thus, both Bodhisattva and Prajnaparamita, through the gate of existence and non-existence of objects, abandon the extremes of addition and slander. The name of Bodhisattva and the name of Prajnaparamita, the attachment to abiding and non-abiding, briefly show the practice of being separated from the two extremes. Now, in order to show in detail the practice of being separated from the two extremes, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, etc., the dharmas of the world and beyond the world, and the conditioned and unconditioned dharmas are separated. The Blessed One said: "I have not seen the increase or decrease of form, and I have not truly seen it," etc. The meaning of increase and decrease is the two extremes of addition and slander, as previously stated. This shows the practice of being separated from the two extremes of addition and slander. "Where should the name Bodhisattva be applied?" etc., shows the practice of being separated from the names of form, etc., and the distinction between abiding and non-abiding. The meaning of being separated from the distinction between the two extremes of abiding and non-abiding is the previous text.
