Knowing the cause of non-arising is the Bodhisattva's knowledge of non-arising. "One should cultivate knowing the Dharma" means knowing all Dharmas manifestly in the conventional sense, and knowing Suchness in the ultimate sense, which is knowing the Dharma. "One should know subsequent realization" means knowing all Dharmas through inference in the conventional sense, and knowing that even if impermanence and the like are not manifestly seen, they will change in such a way, and whatever Bodhisattvas know in accordance with the emptiness of all Dharmas. "One should cultivate conventional knowledge" means that all noble ones know sentient beings and pots, etc., and whatever Bodhisattvas know with a mind that focuses on all imputed Dharmas such as form. "One should cultivate familiar knowledge" means that with whatever knowledge, Bodhisattvas, although cultivating the doors of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness—and the Dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, do not manifestly realize Nirvana, but only with the knowledge that familiarizes and increases these, it is called familiar knowledge. If Nirvana were manifestly realized, then that would become a stream-enterer, etc., because of the necessity of those, one would not touch the ultimate limit, but only cultivate only the Dharma with that knowledge. If so, how is it that cultivating the Dharmas that attain Nirvana does not manifestly realize the ultimate limit? It is because one does not possess aversion and mental engagement, as has been said before. Furthermore, the preliminary to manifestly realizing the ultimate limit is cultivating Shamatha and Vipassana, but Bodhisattvas do not engage in cultivating Shamatha and Vipassana that can attain the ultimate limit in this way, but only for the sake of increasing the cultivation of all Dharmas without an object of focus. Because they focus on the Dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, they separately discriminate with the ordinary mind that is not in meditative equipoise. Therefore, because they do not possess the causes and conditions of Shamatha and Vipassana, they do not manifestly realize the ultimate limit. This

As it is said below, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva contemplates emptiness with all kinds of excellence, although he does not contemplate with the thought, "I shall realize it," he should contemplate, "This is the time to familiarize myself, not the time to realize it." Although he focuses his mind on the object of non-absorption with contemplation, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva at that time will not fall away from the dharmas of enlightenment, nor will he realize the exhaustion of outflows. Such things are explained. What is meant by "cultivating by knowing the sound as it is" is that any sound is called "as it is." Knowing that is knowing the sound as it is. With what knowledge does the Bodhisattva separately understand and know all the sounds and languages of sentient beings in hell, animals, hungry ghosts, gods, humans, and Brahmā? That is knowing the sound as it is. To everything, one should add, "Abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom." It should be understood that this means cultivating in a way that is without an object of focus. What is meant by "one should fully perfect the samadhi with conceptualization and examination" and so on is to show the cultivation of the four dhyanas of the form realm. However, those four dhyanas are also understood as being without an object of focus in the ultimate sense. In the conventional sense, they are cultivated for the benefit of sentient beings through the power of skillful means. Among them, the first dhyana has conceptualization and examination. The second dhyana has no conceptualization, only examination. The third and fourth dhyanas have neither conceptualization nor examination. This will be explained extensively below. What is meant by "one should perfect the faculty of not fully knowing what should be fully known" and so on is to explain the three uncontaminated faculties. In the path of seeing, the faculty of knowing what is not yet fully known arises. In the path of cultivation, the faculty of full knowledge arises. In the path of no more learning, in the state of an Arhat, the faculty of full knowledge arises. These faculties

Therefore, it is called "faculty" in order to obtain the Dharma without outflows. "To fully accomplish the overcoming sources" means: In order to tame and make the mind capable, without valuing the external objects such as good or bad shapes and colors, sizes, etc., but placing them under the control of one's own mind, to know and observe as one wishes. What are these eight overcoming sources? By contemplating internal form, one looks at the small external forms, both good and bad colors, and overcomes, understands, overcomes, and sees those forms. To contemplate in this way is the first overcoming source. By contemplating no internal form, one looks at the large external forms, both good and bad colors, and overcomes, understands, overcomes, and sees those forms. To contemplate in this way is the second overcoming source. By contemplating no internal form, one looks at the external blue color, the color is blue, appearing as blue, emitting blue light. For example, like a flax flower, or a fine blue cloth from Varanasi (Varanasi), the color is blue, appearing as blue, emitting blue light, in the same way, by contemplating no internal form, one looks at the external blue color, the color is blue, appearing as blue, emitting blue light, this is the third overcoming source. By contemplating no internal form, one looks at the external yellow color, the color is yellow, appearing as yellow, emitting yellow light. For example, like a carnation flower, or a fine yellow cloth from Varanasi (Varanasi), the color is yellow, appearing as yellow, emitting yellow light, in the same way, by contemplating no internal form, one looks at the external yellow color, the color is yellow, appearing as yellow, emitting yellow light, this is the fourth overcoming source. By contemplating no internal form, one looks at the external red color, the color is red, appearing as red, emitting red light. For example, like a Bandhu
