Second, the Chapter of Shariputra. Second, the Chapter of Shariputra. Thus, after explaining the introductory chapter, in order to explain the meaning of the main text thereafter, at that time, the Blessed One, knowing that many beings of the world, including gods, including Brahma, including ascetics and Brahmins, including gods, humans, and asuras, were assembled, and that many Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, mostly young, were gathered there, the Blessed One spoke, saying, "The Blessed One instructed the Venerable Son of Sharadvati," and so on. This supreme teaching of the Mahayana is taught to the Bodhisattvas. From the perspective of distinguishing occasions, the instruction is given to Shariputra. The reason for distinguishing occasions is that this Prajnaparamita is taught as a common ground for all three vehicles. How is this evident? Because this Prajnaparamita extensively teaches the Omniscience, the Knowledge of the Aspects of the Path, and the Knowledge of All Aspects. If the instruction were given to some Bodhisattvas and the occasion were distinguished, those of the Lesser Vehicle and other beings might think that this profound Prajnaparamita is not within our realm of practice, and they might not strive diligently. However, if the instruction is given to Shariputra and the occasion is distinguished, then all beings, including those of the Lesser Vehicle, will think that if this Prajnaparamita is compared to the realm of practice of Shariputra, then it will also become the realm of practice for all of us, and all beings, including those of the Lesser Vehicle, will strive diligently. Therefore, the instruction is given to Shariputra and the occasion is distinguished. In another way, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma in such a way that even with a single word, it arises universally in accordance with the minds of all beings, teaching various different Dharmas. Those beings also think individually that the Tathagata is dwelling in front of us and teaching the Dharma. Compared to this, although the instruction could be given to all and the occasion distinguished, those who record the Dharma cannot compile so many things simultaneously. Therefore, in order to transform it into the realm of practice for all beings, the instruction is given to Shariputra.

Therefore, it should be understood that the Dharma was compiled by mentioning only one beginning. Regarding the explanation of this Prajñāpāramitā, the Blessed One taught in three ways: understanding by mentioning the beginning, understanding by elaborating in detail, and the discipline that must be upright. Starting from these three disciplines, there are the gate of brief exposition, the gate of intermediate exposition, and the gate of extensive exposition. It was explained with three gates and eleven categories. These eleven categories are: first, one explanation given to Śāriputra; five explanations given to Subhūti; two explanations given to Indra; two explanations given to Maitreya; after the bodhisattva Dharmapāla and Sadāprarudita conversed, one explanation was given to the sthavira Ānanda and completely entrusted. These are the eleven categories. In order to understand by mentioning the beginning, the brief exposition was spoken: Śāriputra, here A bodhisattva mahāsattva, who desires to fully awaken to all dharmas, in all ways, should diligently practice the Prajñāpāramitā. The term "son of Śaradvatī" is taken from the name of the mother of the sthavira Śāriputra and used as a name. "Here" refers to this great teaching, or to this teaching of the Prajñāpāramitā. A bodhisattva mahāsattva, that is, abiding in this Mahāyāna, or abiding in this Prajñāpāramitā. Regarding "bodhisattva," there are two types of bodhisattvas: conventional bodhisattvas and ultimate bodhisattvas. Among them, a conventional bodhisattva is one who, with perfect complete enlightenment and sentient beings as the object, first generates the mind of enlightenment, thinking: Alas! After I attain unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, I will place all sentient beings in the utterly ultimate nirvāṇa. Thinking in this way, with enlightenment and sentient beings as the object, abiding in the two truths, conventional and ultimate, with wisdom and compassion, one who possesses the generation of the precious mind of enlightenment is a conventional bodhisattva.
