This is the explanation of the qualities of the ninth ground. The Bodhisattva who abides on the ninth ground has, from countless eons in the past, made aspirations to perfect the Buddha's teachings and to ultimately benefit sentient beings. The practices of the Bodhisattva have been perfected and completely fulfilled. Through the power of past aspirations and the strength of practice, from then on, the practice of perfecting the Buddha's teachings and the practice of completely benefiting sentient beings will be completely fulfilled without the need for effort or seeking, thus accomplishing Buddhahood. Moreover, the actions for the benefit of sentient beings will undoubtedly be accomplished, hence it is also called entering the certainty of practice. Having such qualities is also the result of having made aspirations diligently for a long time in the past. Therefore, it is called having made aspirations diligently from countless eons. Having a smiling face, speaking first, and having no angry expression indicate that, through the power of past aspirations, one has certainly entered into practice. These Bodhisattvas of the ninth ground have shown the result of the corresponding cause of practicing the four immeasurables towards sentient beings in the past. Among them, having a smiling face indicates the corresponding cause of loving-kindness. In the past, having practiced loving-kindness towards sentient beings, one always shows only a smiling face to sentient beings, making them happy, and never shows a dark or displeased face to sentient beings, which is the meaning. Speaking first indicates the corresponding cause of compassion. In the past, having practiced compassion towards sentient beings, those Bodhisattvas, even to unfamiliar sentient beings who suddenly arrive, out of the power of compassion, greet them in advance with words that make them happy and speak secret words, which is what is to be explained. Having no angry expression indicates the corresponding cause of joy and equanimity. In the past, one had no jealousy or mental disturbance towards the wealth of sentient beings, and generated joy, and towards those who harm oneself,

They are also patient and accepting of faults that have occurred. They never become frowning, like signs of displeasure, anger, and agitation, and they remain neutral. This is the meaning. Having pleasant and gentle words, being skilled in expressing to others in metered verse, indicates possessing the qualities of a common cause for going to the Buddha-fields and engaging in clairvoyance. These Bodhisattvas go from Buddha-field to Buddha-field from previous Buddha-fields, and they express and praise the qualities of the Tathagatas in metered verse. Through the power of clairvoyance, they teach the Dharma with pleasing and appropriate words that accord with the conduct and thoughts of sentient beings. Therefore, even when they attain the ninth ground, they spontaneously praise the Tathagatas, and when they teach the Dharma to sentient beings, they become skilled in expressing themselves in pleasant and gentle words in metered verse. This is what is being shown. "Unfailing eloquence" indicates that those Bodhisattvas who abide on the ninth ground possess the quality of being great Dharma speakers within the assembly. Because they each possess the fourfold perfect knowledge, when they teach the Dharma to many assemblies, they speak with great eloquence, without any obstruction, and they possess the power of not being overcome by anyone. This is the meaning. "Possessing the fearlessness of overcoming limitless assemblies" indicates possessing the qualities of being skilled in entering assemblies. Thus, because they possess the fourfold perfect knowledge and possess perfect eloquence, no matter which assembly of gods and humans they enter, they are not afraid or timid due to ignorance. Because my knowledge overcomes all assemblies, and no one else can overcome me, it is called possessing the fearlessness of overcoming limitless assemblies. "Being skilled in the source of wisdom that reveals limitless aeons" indicates possessing the result of a common cause of the perfection of diligence. The sentient beings'

And teaching the Dharma, because the diligence of practicing austerities is naturally accomplished, one will not become weary and discouraged with anything. Even if practicing for many kalpas, there is no perception of taking a long time. Therefore, countless billions of kalpas also pass or are spent inadvertently, and those who are skilled at this, the Buddha taught. Thus, after teaching the merits of the ninth-ground Bodhisattvas who have definitely entered into practice, in order to teach the merits of the tenth-ground Bodhisattvas who are obstructed by one birth, it is said that all are understood as illusion, mirage, moon in water, dream, echo, optical illusion, sky, city of gandharvas, emanation, and reflection. Bodhisattvas abiding on the tenth ground, although they realize that all dharmas are without substance in ultimate truth, in conventional truth, offering and honoring the Tathagatas, purifying the Buddha-fields, and the practices of maturing and liberating sentient beings arise naturally without the need to seek or strive, by the power of previous aspirations and the force of practice. And in those practices, not grasping at substance and characteristics, and practicing without attachment, is because all dharmas are understood as illusion and mirage, etc. Thus it is taught, and the ten types of examples of illusion, etc., are also taught in order to dispel the thoughts and various doubts of the beings to be tamed. All dharmas are empty by nature, and if there is no substance, why do various forms such as color and shape appear? For those who think this, the example of illusion is shown. For example, the various things made by a magician, such as horses and elephants, appear in various distinctions such as color and shape, but they are not actually existent. Similarly, all dharmas also appear as things such as color and shape, but they are not actually existent. Some sentient beings think that if all dharmas are without substance, then what do the mind and mental factors arise with as their object?
