Furthermore, taking the example of mirages, mirages themselves do not have the substance of water, but people still take them as targets and generate the concept of water, and mental events and mental factors arise. Similarly, all phenomena also lack inherent substance. Although they are not objects of focus, sentient beings, due to their inverted and confused clinging, give rise to mental events and mental factors. This is how it is taught. If all phenomena lack substance, then how do birth and destruction occur? If you think this way, the example of the moon in water is given. For example, if the moon appears in the sky, then the moon will also appear and be visible in the water. If the moon does not appear in the sky, then the moon in the water will also be absent and invisible. Similarly, the appearance of birth and destruction of all phenomena is also due to the presence of the habit of inverted clinging, so it appears. If those habits are purified and absent, then birth and destruction will not appear either. This is how it is taught. If all phenomena are by nature empty and without substance, then how do worldly terms such as eating and drinking arise? If you think this way, the example of a dream is given. For example, in a dream, eating and drinking, giving and receiving, happiness and suffering, and so on, appear in various forms, but they are not actually of the nature of substance. Similarly, although all phenomena lack substance in ultimate truth, the various worldly terms appear like a dream. This is how it is taught. If all phenomena lack substance, then how do collections of names and segments of sentences arise? If you think this way, the example of an echo is given. For example, a sound is produced from a rock and a hollow valley, and an echo is heard, which is produced by the cause of other sounds. Similarly, from the delusion of the consciousness that clings to sound, collections of names and segments of sentences arise, but in reality, there is no substance. This is how it is taught. If all phenomena lack substance, then how do they arise from causes and conditions? If you think this way, the examples of eye disease, the sky, and a gandharva city are given. For example, due to the cause of blurred eyes, one sees tangled hairs and so on, and on the surface of Mount Meru,

Just as hating the blue sky, and because of the difference in location and proximity to clouds, the city of mirages does not actually exist, so too, all phenomena arise from causes and conditions and are not truly existent, this is what is to be explained. If all phenomena have no substance, then how can they be like cause and effect? When such a question arises in the mind, the example of an image is used to illustrate: just as because of the face, an image similar to the face appears in the mirror, although it appears like the face, the face is not truly existent, similarly, all phenomena arise like cause and effect, but are not truly existent, this is what is to be explained. If all phenomena have no substance, then how can actions such as going and coming exist? When such a question arises in the mind, the example of an emanation is used to illustrate: for example, emanations perform bodily actions such as going and coming, and various verbal actions, although various actions appear, they are not truly existent, similarly, all phenomena appear to perform various actions in conventional truth, but are not truly existent in ultimate truth, this is what is to be explained. "The mind is completely without timidity" refers to the qualities of the bodhisattvas' minds being extremely pure, this is what is to be explained. Bodhisattvas who are on lower grounds, because some have not completely perfected their accumulations, and have conceptual thoughts, their minds may be timid in the presence of the Tathagatas and bodhisattvas who are on lower grounds and are superior in qualities, but bodhisattvas who are on the tenth ground, because they have completely perfected their accumulations, and have achieved the spontaneously accomplished ground of non-conceptualization, and have obtained various powers, they have no timidity in any way, this is what is to be explained. "Skilled in understanding the movement of the minds of all sentient beings, subtle knowledge, behavior, and inclinations" refers to the cause of perfecting the Prajnaparamita, obtaining the samadhi called "following the behavior of the minds of all sentient beings" and the samadhi called "entering the realm of dharma," thereby being able to understand the movement and inclinations of the minds of all sentient beings, as well as the subtle knowledge and behavior of the Tathagatas.
