Because it obstructs, it is called the exhaustion of outflows. 'Without afflictions' refers to abandoning and eliminating the all-pervasive afflictions of karma, the all-pervasive afflictions of afflictions, the all-pervasive afflictions of the aggregates of fruition, and the all-pervasive afflictions of birth. Among these, the all-pervasive afflictions of karma refer to the afflictions that arise from performing virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral actions of formation. The all-pervasive afflictions of afflictions refer to afflictions such as desire. The all-pervasive afflictions of fruition refer to the five aggregates, which are the basis of suffering and become afflictions. The all-pervasive afflictions of birth refer to experiencing much suffering at the time of birth from the mother's womb. Eliminating these is called being without afflictions. 'Mastery' refers to possessing four masteries. What are the four? They are mastery over miraculous powers, mastery over faculties, mastery over samadhi, and mastery over wisdom. Among these, with mastery over miraculous powers, one can control the sentient world and the container world. With mastery over faculties, one brings joy to the world through the pacification and gentleness of behavior. With mastery over samadhi, one's own mind becomes controlled. With mastery over wisdom, one eliminates all afflictions, karma, and fruition, and gains independence as if liberated from bondage. 'Mind utterly liberated' indicates the abandonment of all afflictions and near afflictions belonging to the side of craving. Thus, having attained mind liberation, it indicates liberation from the obscurations of meditative absorption. 'Wisdom utterly liberated' indicates the abandonment of afflictions belonging to the side of ignorance. Thus, having attained wisdom liberation, because all afflictions have been abandoned, it indicates liberation from the obscurations of afflictions. 'Knower' refers to the fearless one. Therefore, in the Sutra Pitaka, it is also said that because of fearlessness, five knowers are taught, such as the fear and dread arising from the stiffness of the tongue.

Because there is no cowardice of the leader in the herd, horses and elephants are fearless; because there is no fear of being harmed by others, lions are fearless; because there is no fear of death, Arhats are fearless. Here, "fearless" means the absence of four kinds of timidity. What are the four? They are timidity due to suffering, timidity due to fear, timidity due to worldly dharmas, and timidity due to ignorance. Among them, because there is no sorrow and lamentation, no suffering, no displeasure, there is no timidity due to suffering. Because there is no being slandered by oneself, being slandered by others, falling into evil destinies, having a difficult life, fearing punishment, fearing a bad reputation, and fearing death, there is no timidity due to fear. Because there is no being tainted by gain and loss, fame and infamy, praise and blame, pleasure and pain, there is no timidity due to worldly dharmas. Because there is no ignorance, no knowledge accompanied by doubt, and no wrong knowledge, there is no timidity due to ignorance. Therefore, because there is no such timidity, it is called fearless. The term "great elephant" means the great master, because it has obtained the excellent dharma of being able to discern, it is called a great elephant. "Done what was to be done, doing what is to be done" indicates the perfection of all the merits that should be done. For the master of deeds, what should not be left undone is called "what should be done." The "doing" that follows is called "what is to be done." Therefore, what the master of deeds should not leave undone is also the perfection of discipline, meditation, and wisdom, thereby liberating oneself from all suffering. For the perfection of these, it is called "done what was to be done." The "doing" that follows is to reduce desires, to be content, to abide in the merits of practice, to please all sentient beings, and so on. For the perfection of these, it is called "doing what is to be done." Therefore, "done what was to be done, doing what is to be done" indicates the perfection of all the merits that should be accomplished. As for "laying down the burden," the burden refers to
