Like finding the best land but seeking inferior food, this shows that focusing on meditation while striving for virtue with body and speech is a mistake. Like enemies appearing for jewels, this shows that encountering obstacles when encountering profound Dharma is not contradictory. An example of a characteristic: like a mother who dies, there will be many children, this shows that all Buddhas of the three times arise from this, thus establishing the relationship between mother and child. Four examples of the characteristics of wisdom are: like a garden of joy, although liberating sentient beings from the suffering of evil realms, it does not cling to sentient beings; like a lion living in a mountain cave, the roar of the selfless lion abandons ego-clinging and shows that bodhisattvas have no fear. Like the sun's orb drying up the earth and showing all forms, this shows that the river of samsara dries up and the dharmas of samsara and nirvana appear. Like saying one sees the sky, although sentient beings express it in words, it shows that seeing nothing is realizing the meaning of Dharmata. Six examples of special characteristics are: like a king who does not go to the city or the countryside, but gathers all the people from his own country, this shows that a bodhisattva who has initially generated bodhicitta will give rise to all the qualities of the Buddha's land. Like a king remaining neutral while the ministers perform their duties, this shows that all the activities of the Buddhas are accomplished by the Perfection of Wisdom. Like in the ocean, if a boat is broken, not grabbing corpses and swimming rings, or grabbing them, this shows that if one does not practice the Perfection of Wisdom, etc., one cannot be liberated from the ocean of samsara, and if one practices the Perfection of Wisdom, etc., one can attain liberation. Like a vase broken and unbroken, touched by water, this shows that not generating and generating bodhicitta will not liberate and will liberate. Like a leaky boat, repaired and not repaired, this shows that abiding and not abiding in vows and precepts, one cannot be liberated from the ocean of samsara and can be liberated. Like an old person needing and not needing people to support them on the left and right, this shows that if one is and is not grasped by skillful means and wisdom, one cannot accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Like the realm of space having no directions such as east, this shows that Dharmata has no direction or bias. Like a bird flying a certain distance with its body, this shows that realizing with medium skillful means and wisdom is difficult or easy. Meditation

The six similes of the signs of non-retrogression are: The simile of searching for the bottom of the ocean with an arrow shows that the depth of the aggregates of discriminating wisdom, etc., cannot be fathomed. The simile of a person who practices Dharma with desire shows that one must not be distracted and must become accustomed to the lineage that one has clarified oneself. The simile of accumulating merit being meaningless shows that one should not be attached to manifest virtues. The simile of the essence of butter burning shows that the mind of enlightenment is interdependent and therefore profound. The simile of a sprout arising from a seed, which is also obstructed, etc., shows that afflictions are not extinguished and are therefore profound. The simile of a drop of water from the beginning to the end of a vase shows that merit is gradually accumulated, etc. The simile of a soft, skilled person going back and forth but not staying shows that although samsara and nirvana are not established, there is karmic result for those who have an object of focus. The nine similes of skillful means are: The simile of a wise person possessing all qualities shows that the antidote to the illusion to be abandoned is also an illusion. The simile of wind relying on the sky shows that all dharmas have no basis or root. The simile of abiding in the sky and not falling into action shows that means do not appear as real. The simile of a person trained in archery shooting an arrow into the sky shows that accumulation, etc., is a means to realize emptiness. The simile of a monk possessing miraculous powers shows that a bodhisattva who has realized emptiness has no weariness in benefiting sentient beings. The simile of holding two umbrellas with two hands shows that one who possesses skillful means and wisdom does not fall into the abyss of samsara. The simile of taking precious jewels and not giving them to relatives is unreasonable shows the means of giving emptiness to sentient beings after realizing emptiness oneself. The simile of a captain familiarizing merchants with cities, etc., to know how to travel shows that all compounded things are a means to realize the nature of other sentient beings. The simile of an emanation body that is not invisible shows that the three doors of liberation, although not real, go for the benefit of sentient beings. Among the thirty-one apex similes, the three similes of signs are that a wise person will surely subdue pride: The simile of a group of patients relying on a doctor shows that one who wishes to pacify the three poisons relies on a virtuous friend with respect.
