When manifestly awakening to all phenomena, saying that it is not a Bodhisattva is the activity of establishing the limbs of awakening. If all phenomena are empty of their own nature in the ultimate sense, even so, conventionally, there is action and there is the result of action, because sentient beings have not come to know the phenomena that are empty of their own nature. Because they do not know, they conceive of persons and phenomena, and thus initiate actions. By engaging in evil, they fall into the three lower realms, and by engaging in good, they are born as gods and humans. Some, having fully understood the absence of self of persons, abandon the happy and unhappy realms and enter into nirvana. Bodhisattvas, knowing the absence of self of both, and having completely perfected the collections of virtue such as the perfections, gradually realize the ten grounds, and in a single instant, with wisdom that is perfectly endowed, manifestly awaken to all phenomena and become Buddhas, Blessed Ones. This is the activity of establishing the connection between action and result as not being in vain. Bodhisattvas do not pass into nirvana with the knowledge of truth, for how could they? Since the four truths are also without essence, they do not perceive any phenomena as true or untrue. By seeing that all phenomena are empty, if they fully know suffering, abandon its origin, realize its cessation, and cultivate the path, then, without generating a mind that focuses on truth, they teach the Dharma with skill in means, seeing all phenomena as emptiness. This is the activity of establishing the four truths. Maitreya asked: If all phenomena are of the nature of non-things, how should a Bodhisattva train from the aggregates up to the Buddhadharmas? If the reality of the characteristic of the conditioned is the inexpressible realm, then it is a complete degeneration. The Blessed One said: If the inexpressible realm is closely observed by the cause of wisdom, is that the reality of the characteristic of the conditioned? Maitreya, it is not so. Maitreya

Its nature is threefold: the nature of complete imputation, the nature of other-dependence, and the nature of the suchness of reality. In order, these are the nature of thorough imputation, other-dependence, and perfect establishment. Among these, in the case of the five aggregates that are like an illusionary person, where is it that they truly exist, or do not exist, or are neither, and all the imputations that they are permanent, etc., all of that is the nature of imputation, the nature of imputation. Those five aggregates, etc., just like an illusionary person, etc., arise dependently on causes and conditions in the conventional sense, which is other-dependence. Those that abide in the nature of the conventional and are free from the nature of imputation are the nature of discrimination and the nature of other-dependence. Among those same five aggregates, etc., which are like an illusionary person, etc., which one abides in the ultimate truth by its very nature? The constant absence of self-nature is emptiness, selflessness, the ultimate limit, the realm of reality, and the ultimate truth of the nature of reality, which is the nature of perfect establishment. Because it is permanent. Thus, in the noble *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*, it says: "The nature of imputation does not exist, other-dependence does exist. The thought of extremes, of addition and subtraction, will be destroyed." Here, whatever has been said, that thorough imputation imputes self-nature to things, the way of refuting that imputation is what is said: "The nature of imputation does not exist." Whatever is conventional, the nature of other-dependence that has been spoken of is not non-existent, and for that reason it is said: "Other-dependence does exist." Whatever has been said, like this, by discriminating into two extremes, one enters into establishing the Middle Way, because it abides in a place of danger. What is said to be destroyed is: "The thought of extremes, of addition and subtraction, will be destroyed." Here, whatever shows that the nature of other-dependence exists in this and that, and things

All descriptions of birth, etc., are established from a conventional perspective, for the purpose of leading beings away from fear. We should understand that these are spoken with the intention of guiding children, and are not the ultimate truth. The Sutras prohibit this, as the Noble Lankavatara Sutra says: "Having discriminated with wisdom, there is no other-nature nor imputation, if there is no nature of accomplishment, how can wisdom not discriminate? Self-nature and the various consciousnesses, things and the un-abiding, those deluded by evil discriminations, fools grasp at these." The Noble Nagarjuna also said: "Emptiness is the one self-nature, consciousness grasps at these things, grasping and other-origination, likewise the perfectly established nature, because of non-arising, the dharmas, proclaim emptiness as supreme. The five aggregates, if briefly summarized, are said to be all dharmas." Therefore, ultimately, the conventional self-nature, which has the same taste, because it is without self-nature, the five aggregates are free from the clinging to duality such as different, non-different, grasper, grasped, permanent, and impermanent, and remain in a pure state until the end of space. Therefore, anyone who is free from the two extremes, abides in the Middle Way, and possesses the power of a Bodhisattva, can see samsara everywhere with their skillful means. He will not completely abandon this samsara, nor will he cling to emptiness, but will abide in it. This is not abandoning nirvana here. Since the request is non-conceptual, how can the nature of non-remainder be understood? All phenomena such as form, and their emptiness, and their being real and unreal, and their being without elaboration, these are the non-conceptual nature of non-remainder. Subhuti asked: How are actions and their results established for phenomena that are by nature without substance? The Blessed One replied: Because sentient beings do not understand that all phenomena are by nature without substance, they are inverted...
