The medium great, the great small, the great medium praise. In addition, there are five such as "gzhan yang," and the word "zhog" is explained in the Nine Sutras, so merit is even more superior, etc., which is an even more superior behavior. If the sentences of the former and latter are incomplete, they should also be supplemented. To be placed in the four dhyanas means that the meditator does not correspond to the afflictions of the desire realm, because it does not focus on the objects of the desire realm, so it is separated from desires and has afflictions, separated from the evil deeds of body, speech, and mind that are the cause of desires, therefore it is with investigation and with analysis. As an antidote to desire, because it is combined with investigation and analysis, the meaning of desire is accomplished, the body and mind are greatly subdued, and if one abides in joy and happiness, one can truly experience them individually. The second is that because one sees the faults of investigation and analysis causing the mind to waver, one liberates the mind from those and abides, completely abandoning all those, and subdues the purity of the inner self with the nature of no investigation and no analysis. The third is that, with the reason of equanimity, just like investigation and analysis, for the sake of joy and equanimity, combined with mindfulness and awareness, not abandoning the opportunity of joy, through those two repeatedly using wisdom, through the body and mind, subduing the extreme subduing of suffering and happiness, therefore it is with happiness. The fourth is that there is neither happiness nor suffering, and the mind of happiness and suffering, pleasant and unpleasant, has also been abandoned long ago, so through the fourth dhyana, happiness is also abandoned, mindfulness is completely purified, so through those, extreme purity is attained here. For this, the first dhyana has five branches, investigation and analysis are the branches of antidote, because those two abandon desire, anger, harm, and investigation, etc. Joy and happiness are the branches of benefit.

Uniqueness is the supporting limb of both of these. By the power of meditative stabilization, one engages in discriminating good qualities, and so forth. The second has four: inner joy is the limb of the antidote, and the remaining limbs are as before. The third has five: equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness are the limbs of the antidote, and happiness is the limb of benefit. The supporting limb is as before. The fourth has four limbs: pure equanimity and pure mindfulness are the limbs of the antidote, and the experience of neither suffering nor happiness is the limb of benefit. The supporting limb is as before. Therein, by meditating on the first dhyana in small, medium, and large ways, one will be born in the retinue of Brahma, the attendant of Brahma, and the Great Brahma in order. By the second, one will be with the lesser light, immeasurable light, and radiant light. By the third, one will be with the lesser virtue, great virtue, and immeasurable virtue. By the fourth, one will be with the cloudless, meritorious increase, and great fruit. Such is the placement of these four dhyanas. Above that are the five Pure Abodes, where only the noble ones will be born. This is the greatest of great reverence. Furthermore, and so on. Adding the supreme is as before, and the immeasurable has already been explained. The four formless states themselves are for the formless realms. If they are obscured and obstructed by forms such as blue and yellow, for those who comfortably abide in various perceptions, by meditating on the perception of space in all ways, those perceptions will not appear in any way, and it will be the infinity of space. This is focusing on the sphere of infinite space. Thus, having generated from the sphere of infinite space, one abides. With whatever knowledge one has faith in the sphere of infinite space, by having faith in the infinite, one completely turns away from the perception of space and focuses on the sphere of infinite consciousness. Having moved closer from the sphere of infinite consciousness, one will view by focusing on the sphere of nothingness, and slightly without, that is, focusing on the very nothingness.
