If asked, "Is there no great difference in the ground?" The answer is, "There is no fault in this, just like one world, like the many worlds of the sands of the Ganges River." The superior merit mentioned in the sutras refers to the superiority of faith and so on. From that (merit), conduct is even more superior. If the words are missing, they should be supplemented externally. As for the four dhyanas, here the sutra says, "Having become secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with thought and examination, born of seclusion, with joy and pleasure, the first dhyana is attained and one abides in it. With the stilling of thought and examination, with inner tranquility, with unification of mind, without thought, without examination, born of samadhi, with joy and pleasure, the second dhyana is attained and one abides in it. Having become detached from the craving for joy, being mindful and aware, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones say, 'Mindful, abiding in pleasure, is equanimity.' That is, the third dhyana, without joy, is attained and one abides in it. Having abandoned pleasure, with the cessation of mental pleasure and displeasure, neither pleasure nor pain, with purity of equanimity and mindfulness, the fourth dhyana is attained and one abides in it." The term "secluded from desires" means that it is not associated with afflictive desires and does not focus on desires for objects. The term "secluded from unwholesome dharmas" refers to the misconduct of body, speech, and mind arising from the cause of afflictive desires. The term "with thought and examination" means that it is associated with thought and examination, which are the antidotes to desire. The term "born of seclusion" means born of seclusion from desire. The term "joy and pleasure" refers to the fulfillment of the meaning of desire, and the term "abiding" refers to the joy and pleasure of the three doors of body, speech, and mind being extremely subdued. The term "first dhyana is attained" means attaining and abiding, and attaining means truly attaining. The term "abiding" means experiencing accordingly. The term "he" refers to the yogi himself, thought

Seeing the fault of the mind being distracted by discernment, turning back from that and abiding in samadhi. 'Cessation of investigation and analysis' means that the mind becomes one due to the power of samadhi. That means that there is no uninterrupted arising of investigation and analysis. 'Without investigation and without analysis' means that there is no clinging to all of them. 'Attachment to joy' means that because of reason, it is equanimity, and also abandoning the joy of investigation and analysis. 'Mindfulness and awareness' means not giving an opportunity for joy and using wisdom many times. Happiness is the happiness of feeling and the happiness of extreme pliancy. 'By body' means the physical body and the mental body. 'Noble ones' means hearers and solitary realizers. 'Abiding in happiness' means this meditator, this is the remainder. Among them, what abandons happiness is the fourth dhyana. Suffering is the first dhyana. Therefore, it was said, 'This before'. Mental happiness is the third dhyana. Mental unhappiness is the second dhyana. 'Previously known' also applies here. Equanimity here is feeling, therefore it was said, 'Neither happiness nor suffering'. 'Equanimity and complete purity of mindfulness' means that these two attain permanent purity here. Among them, the first dhyana has five branches: investigation and analysis are the branches of antidote; joy and happiness are the branches of benefit; one-pointedness of mind is the branch of both. The second has four branches: inner purity is the branch of antidote; the remaining branches are as before. The third has five branches: equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness are the branches of antidote; happiness is the branch of benefit; the branch of abiding is as before. The fourth has four branches: purity of equanimity and purity of mindfulness are the branches of antidote; the feeling of neither happiness nor suffering is the branch of benefit; the branch of abiding is as before. The four dhyanas.
