Oh! There are four types, namely: In order to abandon the non-virtuous dharmas that have arisen, one generates desire, exerts effort, initiates diligence, grasps the mind, and properly establishes it. Similarly, in order to prevent the arising of sinful and non-virtuous dharmas that have not yet arisen, one generates desire, and so on. Similarly, in order to generate virtuous dharmas that have not yet arisen. Similarly, in order to maintain and increase the virtuous dharmas that have already arisen, one generates desire, and so on. Among these, with the armor-like diligence, one generates the desire to think, "I should do this." With the application diligence, one exerts effort. With the unyielding diligence, one initiates diligence. With the skillful means diligence, one properly establishes the mind. Among these, for sinking, one elevates the mind by grasping it. For excitement, one properly establishes the mind by manifestly gathering it. Miraculous abilities are the abode of those who have transcended the world, therefore they are the feet of miraculous abilities. These are also four: the concentration of desire, the concentration of diligence, the concentration of mind, and the concentration of investigation. For example, some people possess strong desire, and thereby generate a concentration with the characteristic of one-pointedness. Some people, through the diligence of correct abandonment, show the acceptance of not generating non-virtuous aggregates. Some people completely hold the mind with the characteristics of abiding, grasping, and equanimity. Some people, regarding subtle non-virtuous actions, investigate whether they are practicing correctly or incorrectly, and thereby correctly and definitively abandon them. Because of these, all afflictions become distant, and in order to abandon habitual tendencies, when diligence is initiated with the above four correct abandonments, eight abandoning mental activities manifest, namely: desire, diligence, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Among these, the thought, "When will I generate worldly and transworldly samadhi?" is called desire.

Napa. All non-virtuous dharmas are definitely destroyed, which is diligence. Believing in order to realize the higher dharma is faith. That which precedes it is extreme gentleness. In that, the aspect of abiding is mindfulness. The aspect of higher seeing is knowing. In that, the mind manifestly understanding is mind. All afflictions being absent is equanimity. Samadhi, such as desire, abandoning conditioned phenomena, possessing the basis of miraculous power, that dwells in solitude, dwells in detachment, dwells in cessation, and cultivates complete transformation through complete abandonment. In that, solitude is from afflictions. Detachment is from existence. Cessation is from suffering. Complete abandonment is abandoning all aggregates, that is complete transformation through complete abandonment. Having power is the faculty, faith and so on are earlier. Obtaining power over the arising of supramundane dharmas, therefore it is the faculty. Becoming the faculties, from the faculty of faith to the faculty of wisdom. Seeing the signs of possessing the basis of miraculous power, hope arises for the arising of superior dharmas, and faith arises in the vehicle of the teacher and the hearers. That faith, where it has power over the arising of supramundane dharmas, is called the faculty of faith. By the power of the faculty, diligence and so on also increase greatly, and likewise it has power over the arising of supramundane dharmas, therefore it is called the faculty of diligence and so on. Therefore, it becomes the five faculties. Cultivating the five faculties, just as demons and other unfavorable factors cannot stand and are difficult to overcome, thus the name of power increases greatly, from the power of faith to the power of wisdom. In the path of seeing, truly realizing reality as it is, is enlightenment and perfect complete enlightenment. Its branches are the seven branches of perfect complete enlightenment, the branch of mindfulness of perfect enlightenment, the branch of dharma discrimination of perfect enlightenment, the branch of diligence of perfect enlightenment, the branch of joy of perfect enlightenment, the branch of extreme gentleness of perfect
