If there is no Sutra Pitaka, then due to seeking that meaning, one does not possess a retinue. Furthermore, in what is said, "Subhuti," and so forth, what is meant by "becoming unwilling to listen" is due to attachment to other teachings. Therefore, here it refers to not possessing a retinue due to desire and laziness, that is, possessing and not possessing a retinue with desire for others. Then, furthermore, the two words "Subhuti" refer to not possessing a retinue due to the desire for sleep and heaviness of body. Furthermore, the words "Subhuti," and so forth, refer to the fault of the suffering of existence, being terrified by the suffering of the lower realms. Furthermore, in the words spoken, "Subhuti," and so forth, even the happiness of the higher realms is suffering, therefore it is the fault of not turning one's back on existence. Then, furthermore, the words "Subhuti," and so forth, refer to not possessing a retinue of being alone and taking a retinue at will, and not distinguishing occasions for those who do not attend, and going and not going to places of famine, and so forth. Among these, not possessing a retinue of being alone and taking a retinue at will refers to the four sets of ten. Furthermore, the one word "Subhuti" refers to the retinue of going and not going to places with fear. Furthermore, what is said, "Subhuti, a Dharma-speaking monk," and so forth, refers to the fault of looking to the household and abandoning listening to the Dharma due to many activities. Thus, having understood the many activities of the demons, and having completely abandoned them, in order to show that those demons will also strive diligently for those, furthermore, "Subhuti, like that," and so forth, refers to the fault of disrupting the tenets with the appearance of a renunciate. Furthermore, "Subhuti," and so forth, refers to the fault of the demon himself transforming into the appearance of the Buddha with the Sangha of monks, and prophesying that those who practice the profound Dharma will attain a lesser Bodhi. From "Subhuti, like that" to the end of the chapter, four meanings are spoken: the many activities of the demons, and their causes, and listening from the demons, and believing in small intelligence, and so forth.

Moreover, just as the Maras diligently counteract those, so too the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not completely embrace them. Those are the forty-six activities of the Maras, the activities of the Maras being to interrupt. The chapter that clarifies it is that chapter. The "Difficult Points Commentary on the Holy Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā," entitled "Essence of the Heart," composed by the master Śāntarakṣita (Shantarakshita), is the eleventh chapter. Having pointed out the faults, the characteristics are to be explained, and based on that. From the treatise: "By what is it symbolized as a characteristic? That which is to be known is also knowing, distinction, agent, and the three, the symbolized essence, whatever it is." It is said that whatever symbolizes is the characteristic. It also has three aspects: knowing, distinction, and agent. There are four aspects of the characteristic of essence. Of these, first, knowing is to be stated. Here, for the moment, based on all knowing. The Tathāgata's arising, the world's imperishable nature, the conduct of sentient beings' minds, their summary and retrospect, the inexhaustible aspects, attachment and so on, and vastness.
