These are the three exceedingly. As for "truly understanding the meaning," the collection of all dharmas, being of one taste in that way, is the meaning of truly. As for "understanding," it is the meaning of directly perceiving. The meaning of this is that one becomes a Buddha through understanding. "Understanding" and "true wisdom" are this, because even with general terms, distinctions can be expressed. Therefore, one becomes a Buddha by possessing these three exceedingly, which are the nature of all meanings, and the meaning of non-reversed and the meaning of true nature. That is the meaning of the word Buddha, and with other definitive words, one is said to be a Buddha because one manifestly and completely awakens to all dharmas as they are. Here, "all dharmas" means all the dharmas of the Buddha, because they are excellent. As for "manifestly and completely awakened," the word "completely" is Buddhahood itself. "Manifestly" means that itself is without remainder, which is the meaning of knowing that is devoid of all elaborations. "As it is" means the nature of the exceedingly pure dharma nature. "Buddha" is said to be a single word because it is intended to express the general. If one is a Buddha merely by understanding, then how is it known? It is whose those dharmas are, because they are close. From where do "devoid of all elaborations" and "as it is" come? From the general term, distinctions can also be understood. Therefore, here the collection of dharmas is the perfectly pure enjoyment body of the Buddha. The exceedingly pure dharma nature of the Buddhas is the nature body, therefore it is called Buddha. From Subhuti's question to Bodhi, it is a wrong conception about the Dharma Jewel, because the unsurpassed Bodhi is the Dharma Jewel, since it is excellently liberated from all dharmas. Therefore, it is said, "As for Bodhi," etc., "Which words are redundant?" is a wrong conception. Thinking thus, if merely understanding or excellent wisdom is Bodhi, then these two are not particularly excellent from all dharmas, thus he thought. The following sutra is the answer, Bo

That which is called "bodhi" is emptiness, because it is clear by being separated from all the elaborations of all phenomena. Otherwise, it would become too extreme. That which is called "that is just a nominal term" means that it is just a nominally established name, but not the real meaning. That which is called "the meaning is the meaning of non-duality, which is the meaning of bodhi" means that, like this, because all phenomena are truly realized, it is bodhi. Moreover, those natures of emptiness become inseparable and clear. Or, bodhi is not just realization, then what is it? Bodhi is the nature of all phenomena. Its suchness is that which abides in its own nature just as it is. That which is called "unmistaken suchness" means that it is separated from all elaborations and is not inverted. That which is called "non-other suchness," where "other" refers to the nature of dependent origination other than the imputed. Its suchness is the entity of suchness, the separate appearance of the imputed nature. That itself is separated from the characteristic of delusion, therefore it is not the suchness of another. That which is called "does not change into another form" means that merely recognizing one's own nature, and the false remainder caused by the habits of ignorance being recognized, is changing into another form. Being separated from that by the exhaustion of habits is not changing into another form. Because it shows that all of these clearly become emptiness, therefore that itself is called bodhi. That which is called "this bodhi is only name and sign" means, what does this sound called bodhi express? It expresses only name and sign, expressing the many sounds of non-form aggregates. Because it is both name and sign, it is name and sign. Stating the sign is to cut off the non-associated formations without cause. Therefore, the sound of name and sign expresses the bodhi of the entity pervading name and sign, bodhi is only name and sign, only various distinctions, that is bodhi. And the word "only" indicates the meaning of certainty. It means that it is only bodhi, not what is to be realized and what realizes.
