Therefore, the phrase "from the beginning" has already been mentioned before. Feeling comfortable is the state of the third (dhyana). Feeling uncomfortable is the state of the second (dhyana). One should follow the phrase "from the beginning." Equanimity itself is the feeling here, which is neither painful nor pleasant. Therefore, it is said that there is neither pleasure nor pain. Those "equanimity and mindfulness are completely purified" are for the sake of attaining very pure here. Therefore, the first dhyana has five branches: investigation and analysis are the branches of antidote. Joy and happiness are the branches of benefit. One-pointedness of mind itself is the branch of the place of those two. The second dhyana has four branches: inner purity is the branch of antidote. The remaining branches are the same as before. The third dhyana has five branches: equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness are the branches of antidote. Happiness is the branch of benefit. The remaining is the same as before. The fourth dhyana has four branches: complete purity of equanimity and complete purity of mindfulness are the branches of antidote. Neither suffering nor happiness is the branch of benefit. The remaining is the same as before. With regard to the formless realms, it is similarly said, "The sphere of infinite space," and so on. That is, having completely transcended the perception of form in all respects, the perceptions of obstruction have disappeared, and not attending to various perceptions, therefore (it is said) 'space is infinite,' which refers to cultivating and abiding in the sphere of infinite space. The perception of form refers to the perception of blue and yellow, and so on. Not being attached to those means completely transcending all of those, because one cultivates the perception of space completely, so there is no appearance. The perception of obstruction refers to the perception of obstacles such as walls and fences. Various perceptions refer to the perceptions of mansions, gardens, mountains, rivers, the moon, the sun, and so on. "Space is infinite" refers to that which has an object of focus on the sphere of infinite space, that is what it is called. That is completely transcending the sphere of infinite space in all respects,

It is the sphere of infinite consciousness, closely cultivated and abiding. How to transcend this? That is, with what consciousness does one believe and understand that space is infinite, and one is liberated from this infinity, because all aspects of the perception of space are ceased. He, in all aspects, transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness, closely cultivates and abides in the sphere of nothingness, which is called going upward from the sphere of infinite consciousness, not seeing any object of focus, and focusing on nothingness itself and entering into samadhi. He, in all aspects, transcends the sphere of nothingness, closely cultivates and abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, which is called being free from attachment to the perception of nothingness, and also ceasing from it, and the perception of nothingness is also ceased from the beginning, hence it is non-perception. Only subtle perception arises, therefore it is neither non-perception nor non-non-perception. Whoever closely holds the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, that is what is said about it. Before and after a Bodhisattva enters into samadhi in those eight samadhis and formless samadhis every day, it is because of contemplating the appearance, characteristics, and signs of space. Among them, calling all these dharmas as neither existent nor non-existent is the appearance of space, because it does not allow different entities and non-different entities. Formless, invisible, and unobstructed are the characteristics of space, because they are in accordance with that dharma. Being without characteristics and being one characteristic is the sign of space, because space appears as the sign of emptiness. If one practices generosity paramita, dedicating all roots of virtue together with all sentient beings to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, then it will become generosity paramita. If one practices morality paramita, permanently abandoning the thoughts of shravakas and so on, that is morality paramita. Likewise, the remainder are the six armors.
