Because of the doubt that the dead body is like that, it is said that it does not go beyond this Dharma nature. Because if there are conflicting causes present, it will definitely become like that. This mind must abandon, which is the correct abandonment, and those are four kinds. For example, in order not to generate unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, one generates aspiration, strives, exerts effort, completely grasps the mind, and correctly establishes it. Similarly, in order to abandon those that have already arisen, similarly, in order to generate wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, similarly, in order to make the wholesome dharmas that have already arisen abide, increase, and become vast, one strives. Among them, generating aspiration is the armor-like effort. Striving like that is called application, which is effort. Initiating effort is the effort of a person. Completely grasping the mind and correctly establishing it are the effort of means. Among them, for weakness, it is completely grasping the mind. For agitation, it is correctly establishing the mind, which is present establishment. Miraculous power is a dharma that transcends the world. The foot of miraculous power, because it is a place, is the foot of miraculous power. That is also four kinds: the samadhi of aspiration, the samadhi of effort, the samadhi of mind, and the samadhi of investigation. Like this, some people, because their minds are endowed with strong aspiration, will generate the samadhi that is characterized by one-pointedness of mind. Some people's correct abandonment is because they are very much in accordance with effort, correctly abandoning unwholesome things and generating wholesome dharmas. Some people's quiescence and complete grasping, as well as the reasons for equanimity, come from the complete subduing of the mind. Some people think, shouldn't I always avoid even the smallest evils? Shouldn't I do anything? For oneself, complete investigation is correctly approaching investigation. Those that have arisen and are entangled have been around for a long time, and in order to abandon the latent tendencies, one again initiates correct abandonment, and then eight kinds of abandoning actions will appear, namely aspiration, effort, faith, and extreme pliancy.

Śamatha, mindfulness, clear comprehension, attention, and equanimity. Among these, when the thought arises to generate the samādhi of equanimity in relation to both the mundane and the supramundane, that is desire. Diligently destroying all non-virtuous dharmas is diligence. Faith is to generate realization of the Guru's teachings. Its precursor is extreme gentleness. Among these, mindfulness is an ally of clear comprehension. Clear comprehension is an ally of vipassanā. Among these, mental engagement is attention. The absence of afflictions is equanimity. Therefore, one cultivates the miraculous feet endowed with the samādhi of desire, etc., and the effort of abandonment. Solitude is freedom from afflictions. Freedom from attachment is freedom from attachment to existence. Cessation is suffering. To teach and eliminate these is suffering, as it relies on them. Therefore, cultivate perfect accomplishment. Because of supreme mastery, it is called the faculty, namely the five, such as faith. Because it generates and attains supramundane dharmas and becomes the master, it is called the faculty, namely the faculty of faith, the faculty of diligence, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of samādhi, and the faculty of wisdom. Seeing the signs associated with the miraculous feet, and from this later generating certainty about the emergence of special qualities, therefore generating faith in the realization of the Teacher and the Hearers, this is the faculty of faith here. Because faith increases, diligence and so forth also increase, therefore becoming the five faculties. Thus, when cultivating the faculties, in order not to be overcome by adverse forces such as Māra, it ranges from the power of faith to the power of wisdom. Bodhi is the path of seeing that realizes things exactly as they are, it is perfect bodhi, from mindfulness as a factor of perfect enlightenment to equanimity as a factor of perfect enlightenment. Among these, the perfect discrimination of dharmas, diligence, and joy are allies of vipassanā. Extreme gentleness, samādhi, and equanimity are allies of śamatha. Mindfulness is an ally of both. Having obtained these, one sees for oneself that one has abandoned the afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing.
