Not making mental effort, and whatever is completely abandoned, that is the perfection of discipline. Whatever makes mental effort towards the all-knowingness, for those patience, desire, and intimate practice are the characteristics of faith, joy, and respect, that is the perfection of patience. Whatever has a steadfast mind towards those, and does not distinguish the occasions for mental effort of hearers and so forth, that is the perfection of meditation. Likewise, I too shall perfect the perfections, and I shall also establish all sentient beings in those, thus, it is intended to dedicate it in common with all sentient beings. Regarding this, this shows two abidings, thus, by the very nature of being in common with all sentient beings, giving the perfections to all sentient beings is the perfection of giving. Regarding that, delight in great giving is the perfection of diligence. That much is called the general characteristic. After that, the specific characteristic is spoken of in six sets of six. After that, whichever two skillful means there are, also in order, the fifth and sixth are joined to the six, and it abides near the perfection of wisdom. The last shows the benefit of armor practice. Therefore, the author of the treatise said: Giving and so forth, the six kinds, by those individually gathered, whatever is the armor practice, is explained as it is with six sets of six. As it is said, giving and so forth, the six kinds, means from giving to wisdom. Individually, means one by one. Gathering those is abiding near all. Whatever is the nature of the great armor practice, is the armor practice, as it is said in the sutra with six sets of six. Having explained the armor practice, the entering practice should be explained, relying on its power, the author of the treatise said: The formless meditations, giving and so forth, the path and love and so forth, being with the absence of an object, the three spheres being completely pure, the purpose and the six superknowledges, in the manner of all-knowing, the entering practice, in the Great Vehicle, should be known as climbing.

Thus it is said that the beginning of practice is the accomplishment of entering. That itself is what ascends to the nature of the path of the Great Vehicle. That is also from meditative concentration and the formless up to the state of omniscience. Therefore, there are nine aspects. In the sutra, 'Shariputra said' and so forth, is what Shariputra asked. 'So-and-so said' and so forth, is the answer. 'Secluded from desires' means because of being separated from the desires of afflictions, and because of not focusing on the desires of objects. 'Secluded from sinful, non-virtuous dharmas' means that the afflictions of desire are the cause of desire, caused by the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. 'Accompanied by investigation and analysis' means because it is fully endowed with investigation and analysis, which are the antidotes to desires. 'Born from seclusion' means born from being secluded from desires. 'Joy and happiness' means accomplishing the meaning of desire, and being endowed with joy and happiness from the body and mind being extremely tamed. 'Having closely cultivated the first dhyana' means having entered into equipoise. 'Abides' means experiencing it oneself accordingly. Likewise, 'the second' means that because that gross investigation and subtle analysis are pacified, there is inner tranquility, and because the continuum of mind becomes one-pointed, the second dhyana, without investigation and without analysis, is closely cultivated and abided in. 'That' means that very yogi. Having seen the fault of investigation and analysis as disturbing the mind, therefore, from those returning, one correctly holds the mind. 'Investigation and analysis being pacified' means by the power of samadhi. 'The continuum of mind becoming one-pointed' means that the uninterrupted arising of investigation and analysis is absent. 'Without investigation and without analysis' means because it has been abandoned in all ways at all times. 'The third' means that one is without attachment to that joy, abides in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, experiences happiness with the body, and the noble ones say that one is mindful, engages in happiness, and is equanimity.
