Verse: Because it is constant, small, medium, and large, etc., the distinctions of smallness, etc., are considered to be nine aspects. Thus it is said. Why is it said that the afflictions of Bodhisattvas are conceptualizations? Because the path of meditating on the antidote to conceptualization is the differentiation of the nature of ultimate emptiness, and because nine kinds of constant arising occur. Thus, in the nine grounds of the desire realm, the four concentrations, and the four formless absorptions, in order, great, medium, and small conceptualizations, each kind being different by the distinctions of great, medium, and small, are nine kinds. Therefore, the antidotes to these are the removal of extreme darkness by a small light, and the removal of smallness by greatness, etc. The distinctions of small, medium, and large are also each different by the distinctions of small, medium, and large, and are nine kinds. Therefore, the path of meditation is extremely differentiated, and is considered to be nine aspects. If one whose object of practice is emptiness, how can the distinctions of merit, etc., be accommodated? Thus, welcoming doubt, it is said: The teachings of immeasurable, etc., are not tolerated in the ultimate truth. Thus it is said. The Mother of the Victorious Ones, in each of these, makes the path of meditation free, and speaks of the arising of immeasurable merit, immeasurable, and limitless. How can these be established and tolerated in the nature of ultimate truth, where there is nothing to do in meaning, letters, and terms? The answer to that is: In the conventional, the compassionate, the Thus-Gone One accepts to show the common cause. Thus it is said. Indeed, those teachings are not made free by the ultimate truth, but in the conventional, by the power of the common cause of the Dharmadhatu, which is the nature of great compassion without an object, it is shown that great fruits arise greatly for childish beings, and the Tathagata promises this. Furthermore, what is the excellence of familiarizing oneself with the nature of emptiness? Thus, welcoming doubt, it is said: For things that cannot be spoken of, decrease and non-increase are impossible. By the path called meditation, what decreases and what

can be obtained. This is what it says. Because the nature of the path of Dharma, being without self-nature, is truly such that it cannot be expressed as being the same, different, both, or neither, it is free from contradiction and opposing sides, and it is impossible to arise. Therefore, by the path called meditating on the characteristic of being inexpressible, what aspect of the opposing side is abandoned, and what aspect of complete purification is obtained? If it is said that perfect meditation cannot be achieved by doing nothing at all, then the answer to that is: Like enlightenment itself. This accomplishes the desired meaning. Enlightenment is suchness itself, and that is also its nature. This is what it says. Just as the unsurpassed enlightenment, which is characterized by suchness, cannot be distinguished by anything, but only through the prior arising of a mind with a special meaning of appearance, in accordance with the merit and wisdom of those to be tamed, merely as the master of the Dharmakaya and so forth, it accomplishes the meaning of manifesting what is desired, so too, by meditating on this path with the characteristic of suchness, by means of being free from adventitious stains, in the conventional sense, it accomplishes the meaning of the decline and increase of the opposing side and the antidote, but in the ultimate sense, it is considered to be the negation of decline and increase. Regarding enlightenment itself, there is doubt that accomplishing the meaning of the cause is unreasonable, (to this) it is welcomed: The mind is enlightened by the former, it is unreasonable, and the latter is also unreasonable. This is what it says. If it is said that enlightenment is manifested through the arising of a special mind, then the prior arising of the mind is unreasonable, because it is unreasonable to accomplish completeness as such a result. The latter is also unreasonable, because all of its power is ultimate in the former, and without it, it cannot exist. Similarly, if it is said that the many that have become prior and subsequent are also unreasonable, because they are destroyed immediately after they arise, and there is no following, therefore they are not related to each other. If this is said, then the answer to that is: By way of the example of a lamp, the profound Dharma nature has eight aspects. This is what it says. Just as the flame of a burning lamp does not depend on the second moment, and the first moment cannot burn the essence of the fuel,
