The bad states of the body, such as yawning and swaying; the bad states of the mind, such as distraction and desire; the bad states of speech, such as recitations caused by irrational thoughts, these three are related to bad states. Holding onto the reasons of outsiders that are not prophesied and whose depths cannot be explored; falling away due to attachment to causes by seeking the treasury of the Hearers' Vehicle; falling away by being attached to inferior tastes and tasting excellent tastes; falling away from universally grasping the excellence of the Great Vehicle by considering the treasury of the Hearers and others as supreme; considering things that are not the source of jewels as the source of jewels, therefore constantly falling away from what should be done, these are the causes of falling away. Desiring to attain omniscience, but studying the inferior vehicle, this is the falling away of the connection between cause and effect. And falling away from the treasury of teachings that is the basis of inferior qualities, that is, the causes and conditions of falling away from the Great Vehicle. Because the mind that practices other sutras arises, the ability to discriminate many objects changes. Because one thinks that letters are the Perfection of Wisdom, one is too attached to writing letters. Focusing on non-existent signs, being too attached to non-existent things. Considering the texts that write letters as the Mother of Wisdom, this is attachment to letters. Considering non-letters as the Mother of Wisdom, this is attachment due to the absence of letters. Being distracted by various thoughts, and paying attention to places and cities, etc. Enjoying worldly pleasures, tasting the flavors of gain, respect, and verses. Seeking skillful means from the treasury of the teachings of the demons, this is seeking the path by the non-path, these are the eight causes of distraction. For these actions, one falls away due to diligence and non-diligence, desire and laziness. Because one wants to stay here or go elsewhere, one falls away because the objects of desire are different. Overly valuing Dharma and worldly things, and greed being either large, small, or neither large nor small. Monasteries and other places, having or not having the qualities of practice. And having faith in the falling away of the Perfection of Wisdom, and having faith in things that are not the Perfection of Wisdom, etc.

The nature of phenomena that is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous, becoming generous or miserly through one's own actions, becoming a giver or non-receiver through one's own circumstances, understanding through mentioning the beginning and elaborating through the distinction of faculties, manifestly realizing or not realizing the Dharma of Sutras, etc., due to the power of vastness and otherness, possessing or not possessing the six perfections through the doors of conduct and discipline, these are such. Similarly, being skilled in the means and non-means of omniscience itself, obtaining or not obtaining the dharanis of words, etc., desiring or not desiring to write letters for the purpose of writing in books, being separated or not separated from the intention of desire, etc., these are called the fourteen connections that any listener or speaker has. Turning away from the meaning of the lower realms by speaking non-praise of the lower realms, not necessarily arising by speaking of the merits of the heavenly realms, and the mind being displeased by going to the happy realms, these are called the two connections related to oneself. Being alone, with retinue, and manifestly joyful through discipline and circumstances, not promising to explain, or even if promised, not opening the opportunity, and wanting to follow the listeners, etc., wanting or not wanting to give a little material offering through the door of manifest attachment, going in the direction of becoming or not becoming an obstacle to life due to the difference of conditions, these are such. Similarly, going or not going in the direction where famine has arisen and in the direction disturbed by thieves, etc., these are called the six connections that both have. Related to the teacher himself, being unhappy by looking at the house that is loved due to the reasons of attachment to gain, etc., this is called one. The demon saying, "This is, but that is not," and the application of distinguishing by the nature of removal, separating by showing the image of giving, etc., the false close practice, the false increase and the emanation of the Bodhisattva, creating joy in the object as it is not, these are called the three aspects of wrong guidance. Thus, there are forty-six. Thus, merits and faults.
