Endowed with the merits of practicing austerity, such as living on alms and dwelling in solitary places, and possessing the patience to realize profound Dharma, never abandoning the precepts one has taken, even for the sake of life, and not properly attending to all of these, criticizing the qualities of desire as faults and not generating a mind of desire from the perspective of non-inherent existence, inclining towards nirvana in accordance with the beings to be tamed, and having no manifest activity towards all dharmas, not clinging to any possessions and completely giving them away, having no weariness in accomplishing virtue and not dwelling near impure places, and having no view or attention due to manifest attachment to things. Thus, by cultivating these ten dharmas as before, one overcomes and perfects the fourth bhumi, the Radiant. Thereafter, the purification of the fifth bhumi is taught, with the perfection of meditation being the main focus: Familiarity and attachment to home, as well as places that have become noisy, self-praise and disparagement of others, the ten paths of unwholesome actions, satisfaction with arrogance and perversion, evil wisdom and tolerance of afflictions. If these ten are completely abandoned, then the fifth bhumi is truly attained. This is its meaning. For the sake of gain and so on, one does not become familiar with nuns and so on, nor does one falsely manifest rebirth, one does not show the house of those who have faith in others, nor does one become jealous of the gain obtained from patrons, one is not distracted by the noise of cities and so on, nor does one dwell in places where inferior vehicle talk and afflictions arise, one does not speak praise of oneself, nor does one see all inner dharmas, abandoning the slander of others, nor does one perceive all outer dharmas, abandoning the ten paths of unwholesome actions, abiding correctly in the ten wholesome actions, not becoming arrogant with learning and discipline and so on, and especially not seeing the dharma of increased arrogance, abandoning the attachment to reversing good and non-good, abandoning the attachment to things, abandoning all the differences of wrong views, not hesitating and not becoming of two minds, desire.
