They are perfectly complete, and these marks can be truly accomplished. Welcoming the lama, etc., and truly upholding and being stable, relying on the objects of gathering and giving generously, and saving those who should be killed, practicing liberation and virtue, truly upholding and expanding, etc., are the nature of the cause of accomplishment, as stated in the sutras. Thus it is said. Among them, the first five verses show the respective nature of the marks. After that, one verse generally shows the cause of accomplishing them. Then, two verses truly explain each cause. In all circumstances, there is no offense with harsh words, therefore the upper body is like a lion. Following pleasant speech and beautiful speech, therefore the tips of the arms are very round. Because of giving medicine and so on, the shoulders are full. Because of serving sick beings, one knows the best taste. Because making forests and gardens etc. properly received, it covers the water like a banyan tree. Because especially giving monasteries and so on, the head has a crown protuberance. Because speaking extremely gentle words and so on, the tongue is long. Because making all sentient beings of all realms understand the sacred Dharma, it is the voice of Brahma. Because abandoning meaningless words, the cheeks are like a lion. Because respecting all beings and so on, the teeth are white. Because of pure livelihood, the teeth are even. Because constantly practicing truthful words, the teeth are close together. Because abandoning divisive speech, one has forty teeth. Because looking at all sentient beings like an only child, the eyes are deep blue. Because looking without anger and so on, it is like the eyelashes of a bull king. What are the eighty minor marks of excellence? As said in the verses in between: The Buddha's nails are copper-colored, With a glossy, high color, and all the fingers, Round, full, and slender with grace, Veins invisible and knots absent. Ankles invisible, heels even, Like a lion, elephant, bird, and deer king, Walking elegantly, moving to the right, Beautiful walking, peaceful and steady. Like being wiped, arranged in order, A clean, soft, and pure body, The marks are completely perfect, The limbs of the body are wide and wonderful. Steps are steady, both eyes are clear, Speech is beautiful, the body is young, The body is not withered, full and round, The body is extremely compact and dignified. Limbs are distinct and relaxed, The gaze is clear and without obstruction, The waist is round, walking without leaning, Relaxed and natural, the navel is deep. Right-swirling navel marks are deep and coiled, Everything is pleasing, those who see are happy, Behavior is upright, the body is
