The explanation of the second chapter of the Ornament of Realization, called "A Garland of Lights of Wisdom," is completed. Chapter Three: Explanation of the Nature of All-Knowingness. Since the complete and excellent knowledge of all paths also depends on the knowledge of all things, the all-knowingness with the characteristics of reality is first explained. It says: "It is not on this shore or the other shore, nor does it abide in between them. In order to know that all times are equal, it is considered the perfection of wisdom." That is it. Because all phenomena of the three times are realized as equal in nature, which is without origination from the beginning, and because of wisdom and true compassion, the extremes of this shore and the other shore, samsara and nirvana, the characteristics of permanence and annihilation, and also not abiding in between them, it is considered the perfection of wisdom of all-knowingness of reality. This shows that the Shravakas and others do not know the equality of the three times, and therefore their perfection of wisdom is limited to their own realization, and they are separated from wisdom and compassion. By focusing on things and non-things, they are shown to abide on the extremes of existence and peace. If so, how can the perfection of wisdom, which is characterized by non-abiding, become distant or near to it? The reason for this is explained: "It is distant because of non-skillful means, through the gate of focusing on characteristics. It is said to be truly near through skillful means." Like the multitude of ordinary beings who, not knowing the suchness of dependent origination of illusion, become attached to individual objects, the Shravakas and others, being separated from skillful means such as true spiritual friends, become distant from this mother of no characteristics through the gate of focusing on the characteristics of names and meanings of things. Just as the magician himself is not deluded by the meaning of falsehood and does not become extremely attached, the Bodhisattva, having dwelt for a long time, greatly rejoices in the spiritual friend who is skilled in that suchness, and those who have the characteristics of skillful means, who eliminate the characteristics of confusion about things with deep wisdom such as hearing, are in accordance with abiding near to reality.

You have explained how to properly approach this mother of the victorious ones. What, then, is the clinging to characteristics that leads to alienation? As it is said, these are the inconsistent aspects of cognition: Forms and other aggregates are emptiness, Phenomena included in the three times, Generosity and other aspects of enlightenment, The cognition of practice is inconsistent. This refers to the cognition that forms and other aggregates are empty of self, which is imputed by others; the cognition that phenomena included in the three times, such as the past, are contaminated; the cognition that generosity, mindfulness, meditation, immeasurables, and so on, are practices. Even these antidotes, due to clinging to the characteristics of the object, are inconsistent aspects. Furthermore, what is the non-clinging that is close? As it is said, these are the aspects of antidotal cognition: In generosity and so on, there is no clinging to self, Others who join in that, That is the end of cutting off attachment, Attachment is subtle in the victorious ones and so on. This refers to the fact that through the purity of the three spheres, one realizes that there is no self or what belongs to self in the three, such as generosity, abides in self-nature, and causes other beings to practice in the same way, thereby cutting off all extremes of attachment, and is therefore an antidote in all respects. When it is said that the cognition of generosity and so on must be abandoned, remembering the Tathagatas and so on is also a cause of merit and an antidote, but since cognition itself is the essence of subtle attachment, it is not an inconsistent aspect. Why is subtle attachment an inconsistent aspect? The reason for being far removed from the subtle nature of objects is explained: The path of Dharma is by nature, Solitary, therefore it is profound. This refers to the fact that the nature of all phenomena is like the sky, and its very nature is profound, so even very subtle attachment does not come near it. Therefore, the antidote for abandoning them is explained: Knowing that all phenomena are of one nature, By this, attachment is abandoned. This refers to the fact that there is no self-nature.
