Thinking that one cannot become enlightened by just these without accumulating (merit), the following was spoken. Therefore, in order to show the other three (methods) on the path of enlightenment which is the nature of the accumulation of merit, the following was spoken. Showing enlightenment to others, and its cause is complete dedication, the uninterrupted cause of obtaining it, is the characteristic of many merits. Thus it is said. Showing enlightenment to others, means showing to other perfectly complete enlightenments, this is the first (method). Its cause is complete dedication, means its cause, which is the cause of enlightenment, that is, completely dedicating the nature of the Prajnaparamita Sutra to the meaning of enlightenment, this is the second (method). The uninterrupted cause of obtaining it, is the characteristic of many merits, means in order to obtain perfect and complete enlightenment, without obstacles, distinguishing as much as possible, the characteristic of the accumulation of merit that one has in one's own cause, this is the third (method). Cause, means the enlightenment accomplished by the two accumulations. Then, what was said in order to obtain this perfect and complete enlightenment? To this it was said: Stainless exhaustion and non-arising, wisdom enlightenment is thus said, because of exhaustion and non-arising, these should be known in order. Thus it is said. Here, the first half of the verse speaks of the characteristics of enlightenment sought by the Shravakas. The latter half of the verse juxtaposes the characteristics of enlightenment sought by the Mahayana. Defilements are the afflictive obscurations and the obscurations of knowledge, etc. Exhaustion and non-arising, means the exhaustion of those that have arisen and the non-arising of those that have not arisen. Those are the wisdom of exhaustion and non-arising, that is what is called enlightenment. The characteristic of the wisdom of the exhaustion and non-arising of defilements is the meaning of enlightenment. One characteristic of enlightenment. Abandoning these and accepting others with reason, is what is called the characteristic of the Mahayana enlightenment. Defilements are like fabricated self, etc., because there is no exhaustion and non-arising. Therefore, because there is no exhaustion, there is no arising, it is the incomparable nature and non-arising.
