Commentary: Now, whatever is said in the scriptures of the Hearers and others who know everything, such as the sixteen aspects of the four truths, should be realized here on the path of the Bodhisattva as it is. Therefore, it is said for the sake of realization: 'Not this shore, not the other shore, not the edge, not dwelling in between them, knowing the equality of all times, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita.' Prajnaparamita here is the knowledge of all. Since the Hearers do not fully know the equality of all times, they do not accept samsara and nirvana, nor do they accept the middle way. It should be understood that Bodhisattvas should not accept this, and that is Prajnaparamita. 'Not this shore' refers to samsara. 'Not the other shore' refers to nirvana. 'Not dwelling in between them' refers to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. 'Desire' means truly desiring. It is said for 'whoever': 'Knowing the equality of all times.' That is, all things of the three times, whose nature is self-luminous, empty of grasping and being grasped, that equality, by actually realizing it, one does not dwell extremely in samsara, nor does one dwell extremely in nirvana. If emptiness is universally present, then the Prajnaparamita of realization is also universally present. If so, why can't the Hearers realize it, and only the Bodhisattvas can realize it? To this thought, it is said: 'That is far away because of the door of clinging to signs, because of the lack of means. That is said to be truly near by those skilled in means.' 'That is far away because of the door of clinging to signs' means clinging to the aggregates and so on as grasping and being grasped, and that is because of clinging to signs. Because of focusing on grasping and being grasped, there is no means. Because there is no means, the Prajnaparamita of the Hearers is far away, and even if it is directly seen like impermanence and so on, certainty does not arise. The Buddhas and others have prevented grasping and being grasped by skillful means. The Prajnaparamita of the nature of directly realizing the emptiness of characteristics is universally near.
