The eighth chapter explains. The eighth chapter explains. Commentary on the first chapter. Now, in order to eliminate the brief indication of the meaning of the seventy verses, it is said: The arising of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment. This and that, just as the sutra says, are expressed through the gates of brevity and elaboration. (Bodhicaryāvatāra, Chapter 1, Verse 3) Among these, "mind" refers to merely grasping the meaning for the benefit of others. Therefore, the word "mind" refers to the desire for perfect and complete enlightenment. What is it? It is said: The arising of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment. That is to say, it is the desire to attain perfect and complete enlightenment. Then, for what is it done? It is said: For the sake of others. Others refer to all sentient beings other than oneself. Their benefit is to be completely liberated from samsara and the causes of samsara, and to establish them in the state of Buddhahood and the causes of Buddhahood. To desire perfect and complete enlightenment for the benefit of beings, this is the meaning of generating the mind of enlightenment. Just as the Bhagavan, in the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra, explains the desire to attain perfect and complete enlightenment through the gates of brevity and elaboration, that is also said for the benefit of others. Similarly, I will also explain it here in accordance with it, that is, "This and that, just as the sutra says, are expressed through the gates of brevity and elaboration." "Just as the sutra says" means in accordance with the sutra, not arbitrarily. Having explained the nature of generating the mind of enlightenment, now its detailed classification is explained. That is: It is like earth, gold, and the stainless, treasure, source of jewels, and the ocean, vajra, mountain, medicine, friend, wish-fulfilling jewel, sun, and song, king, treasury, great road, vehicle, adorned water, and man, pleasant sound, river, and clouds, these are the twenty-two similes. (Bodhicaryāvatāra, Chapter 1, Verse 4) Among these, "it" refers to the mind of enlightenment, together with aspiration and so on, generating all white dharmas, and similar to the earth of all dharmas such as holding and so on, it should be understood as having twenty-two aspects. Therefore, the mind of enlightenment, that is, the mind of enlightenment together with a small aspiration, is like the earth, being white.
