The purity of the Hearer is from abandoning the afflictions. The purity of the Solitary Buddha is from abandoning the conceptualization that grasps one aspect of the obscurations to knowledge. The purity of the Bodhisattva is from abandoning the obscurations to attaining the three vehicles. The purity of the Bhagavan Buddha is from abandoning the afflictions and the obscurations to knowledge, together with their imprints, on all phenomena of all kinds, that is, the utterly pure. The nine grounds are the eight meditative stabilizations of the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. These purities are to be cultivated. Therefore, for the nine grounds, the nine paths of cultivation should be taught: On the nine grounds, there is the great, the great, etc., defilements, through the door of the antidote, the small, the small, etc., is the path. Thus, it is pure because it purifies. The antidote to the nine aspects of the opposing side, such as the great of the great, is the nine aspects of the path, such as the small of the small, in the order as it is. The purity of the Buddha, that is, how is it utterly pure, is spoken of in this way: By abandoning that dispute, the path is the measure and the measured, the equality of the three realms, is considered the nature of the antidote. Thus it is said. The equality of the measurer and the measured, the measurer is the grasping, the measured is the grasped. The equality of these is equal because it is neither one nor two, because it is without inherent existence. These themselves are by the nature of the antidote to the three realms. As it is said, the path of cultivation of the utterly pure is the utterly pure Bhagavan Buddha. By abandoning that dispute, that is, the opposing side of the small of the small, etc., of the antidote side of the small of the small, etc., this is not reasonable, because it is reasonable to abandon the opposing side of the small of the small, etc., by the antidote side of the great of the great, etc. For example, washing away the subtle stains that cling to clothes can be done by the great effort of the washer. Therefore, one should understand the order as it is spoken.

Pa'o. Explanation of the Third Chapter. Now, whatever the Shravakas and others, who are all-knowing, have said in their Abhidhamma Pitaka, such as the sixteen aspects of the four truths, should be realized here on the Bodhisattva path as they are. Therefore, it is said for the sake of realization: "Not on this shore, not on the other shore, not in between them, in order to know the equality of all times, it is called Prajnaparamita." That is to say, Prajnaparamita here is all-knowing. Because the Shravakas do not fully know the equality of all times, they do not acknowledge Samsara, Nirvana, or the Middle Way. It should be understood that Bodhisattvas should not acknowledge in this way, and that is Prajnaparamita. "Not on this shore" refers to Samsara. "Not on the other shore" refers to Nirvana. "Not in between them" refers to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. "Desire" means to truly desire. Regarding "what," it is said: "In order to know the equality of all times." That is to say, all things of the three times, their nature is emptiness, devoid of the grasping and the grasped, that is equality, by actually manifesting these, it is said that one does not abide in Samsara and does not abide in Nirvana. If emptiness is universally present, then the realized Prajnaparamita is also universally present, then why can't the Shravakas realize it, and only the Bodhisattvas can realize it? To this, it is said: "Because of clinging to characteristics, it is not skillful means, therefore it is far, because of skillful means, it is said to be truly near." That is to say, "Because of clinging to characteristics" refers to clinging to the aggregates and so on as the grasping and the grasped, this is because of clinging to characteristics. Because of focusing on the grasping and the grasped, it is not skillful means. Because it is not skillful means, the Prajnaparamita of the Shravakas is far, although it is present like impermanence and so on, there is no arising of certainty. The Buddhas and others, however, through skillful means, have prevented the grasping and the grasped. The Prajnaparamita that manifests the emptiness of characteristics.
