Extensive Explanation of Meanings. Extensive Explanation of Meanings. Shown by Eight Chapters. Commentary on the First Chapter. Now, in order to refute the essence of the seventy verses briefly stated, it is said: The arising of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment. That and that, just as in the sutras, are spoken of through the gates of brevity and extensiveness. Among these, "mind" should be understood as referring to merely grasping the meaning of benefiting others. Therefore, the term "mind" is understood as referring to the desire for perfect and complete enlightenment itself. What is it? It is said: The arising of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment. This refers to the desire for perfect and complete enlightenment itself. How is it done? It is said: For the sake of others. "Others" refers to all sentient beings other than oneself. Their benefit is to be completely liberated from samsara and the causes of samsara, and to establish Buddhahood itself and the causes of Buddhahood. Desiring perfect and complete enlightenment itself for the benefit of beings is the meaning of generating the mind of enlightenment. Just as the Bhagavan explained the desire for perfect and complete enlightenment in the Prajnaparamita Sutras through the gates of brevity and extensiveness, that was also spoken for the benefit of others. Similarly, I will also show here in accordance with that, that and that, just as in the sutras, are spoken of through the gates of brevity and extensiveness. "Just as in the sutras" means to act in accordance with the sutras, not arbitrarily. Having explained the nature of generating the mind of enlightenment, now the various distinctions of it are explained: That is, earth, gold, and stainless, treasure, jewel mine, and ocean, vajra, mountain, medicine, and spiritual friend, wish-fulfilling gem, sun, and song, king, treasury, and great road, vehicle, adorned water, and people, sweet sound, river, and clouds, these are the twenty-two aspects. Among these, "that" refers to the arising of the mind, together with intention and so on, generating all white dharmas, and similar to the earth of all dharmas such as holding, it should be understood as having twenty-two aspects. Therefore, the arising of the mind is the arising of the mind together with a small intention.
